Cattrall was born on 21 August 1956 in Liverpool, England, to Gladys Shane and Dennis Cattrall. Her family emigrated to Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada, when she was three months old. At age 11, she returned to Liverpool, where she took acting examinations at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After graduating from high school in Canada in 1972, she moved to New York City to attend the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and pursue a professional acting career.
Upon graduating, Cattrall signed a film contract with director Otto Preminger and made her film debut in the action thriller Rosebud (1975). She subsequently became a contract player with Universal Studios, appearing in television guest roles on series such as Quincy, M.E., Columbo, Starsky & Hutch, and The Incredible Hulk, as well as miniseries like The Bastard and The Rebels. She transitioned into film with roles in Tribute (1980) and Ticket to Heaven (1981), subsequently rising to prominence in feature films including Porky's (1982), Police Academy (1984), Big Trouble in Little China (1986), Mannequin (1987), and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).
Throughout her career, Cattrall has maintained an active presence on stage. Her theatre credits include Broadway and West End productions such as Wild Honey, Miss Julie, Whose Life Is It Anyway?, Private Lives, Antony and Cleopatra, and Sweet Bird of Youth. In addition to her stage and film work, she appeared in various television projects during the 2000s, including the film Ice Princess (2005), the television movie My Boy Jack (2007), and Roman Polanski's political thriller The Ghost Writer (2010).
From 2014 to 2016, Cattrall starred in and executive produced the HBO Canada series Sensitive Skin, earning a nomination for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Her subsequent television work included appearances in the BBC miniseries The Witness for the Prosecution (2016) and the Swedish series Modus (2017), followed by a main role in the Paramount+ drama series Tell Me a Story from 2018 to 2019.
In the 2020s, Cattrall starred in and produced the Fox drama series Filthy Rich (2020). She subsequently appeared in the Peacock revival series Queer as Folk (2022) and the Netflix series Glamorous (2023). From 2022 to 2023, she played the narrator role of future Sophie on the Hulu sitcom How I Met Your Father. Her recent film work includes starring alongside Robert De Niro in the comedy feature About My Father (2023).
