Kelsey Grammer

Allen Kelsey Grammer is an American actor and comedian recognized primarily for his portrayal of Dr. Frasier Crane on the television sitcom Cheers and its spin-off series Frasier. His performance as the character spanned over two decades, making it one of the longest-running live-action portrayals in primetime television history. Across his career, Grammer has earned wide acclaim, including multiple Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award.

Born on February 21, 1955, in Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Grammer was raised in New Jersey and Florida by his mother and maternal grandparents. His early life was marked by personal tragedies, including the deaths of his father, sister, grandfather, and two half-brothers. He began performing on stage while attending Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale. He later earned a scholarship to study drama at the Juilliard School, though he was eventually expelled after missing classes following his sister's death.

Grammer began his professional acting career in regional theatre and on Broadway. After an internship at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, he made his Broadway debut in 1981 in Macbeth. He went on to appear in stage productions of Othello, Plenty, and Sunday in the Park with George. His major television breakthrough occurred in 1984 when he was cast as Dr. Frasier Crane in the NBC sitcom Cheers. Initially slated for a six-episode guest stint, he became a regular cast member through the show's conclusion in 1993.

In 1993, Grammer continued playing the character as the lead of the spin-off series Frasier, which followed the psychiatrist's life in Seattle. Beyond starring in the show, he directed more than 30 episodes and sang its closing theme song. The series ran for 11 seasons until 2004, earning critical success and numerous honors. Grammer received four Primetime Emmy Awards for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on the show. He later returned to the character in a Paramount+ revival launched in 2023.

In addition to his sitcom roles, Grammer built a prominent career as a voice actor and film performer. He began voicing the recurring character Sideshow Bob on the animated series The Simpsons in 1990. His other voice projects include feature films such as Anastasia, Toy Story 2, and Teacher's Pet. On screen, he portrayed Dr. Hank McCoy, also known as Beast, in superhero films including X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and The Marvels. His other film credits include Down Periscope, The Pentagon Wars, and The Expendables 3.

Grammer has maintained an active career across television drama, production, and stage performances. He won a Golden Globe Award for his dramatic portrayal of a corrupt Chicago mayor in the series Boss. On stage, he starred in Broadway revivals such as La Cage aux Folles, which earned him a Tony Award nomination, and Finding Neverland. In 2016, he won a Tony Award as a producer for the revival of The Color Purple. His subsequent stage work includes performing in Man of La Mancha at the London Coliseum.
