Jason Statham

Jason Statham is an English actor widely recognized for his roles in action thriller films, frequently portraying tough, gritty, or violent characters. He has been credited with leading a resurgence in action cinema during the 2000s and 2010s. By 2017, films featuring Statham had grossed over 1.1 billion pounds, or 1.5 billion dollars, establishing him as one of the film industry's most bankable stars. Overall, films in which he has appeared have accumulated more than 8.5 billion dollars in worldwide box office grosses.

Born on 26 July 1967 in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, England, Statham is the son of Eileen, a dancer, and Barry Statham, a street seller who also worked as a house painter, coal miner, and singer. Growing up in Great Yarmouth, Statham attended local grammar school from 1978 to 1983 alongside future actor Vinnie Jones, who introduced him to football. Statham practiced martial arts such as Chinese martial arts, kickboxing, and karate, while selling fake perfume and jewellery on street corners to earn a living. He was also a passionate diver, serving on Great Britain's National Swimming Squad for 12 years and representing England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.

Statham was later discovered by Sports Promotions while training at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre, leading to modelling contracts with brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Griffin, Levi's, and French Connection. His background as a street seller led director Guy Ritchie to cast him as a streetwise con artist in the crime comedy thriller Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998. The commercial success of this film and their subsequent 2000 collaboration, Snatch, catapulted Statham to fame and facilitated his transition into Hollywood projects.

Statham solidified his reputation as an action lead by playing Frank Martin in the Transporter series from 2002 to 2008. Over the following decade, he headlined numerous commercially successful action films, including Crank in 2006, The Bank Job in 2008, The Mechanic in 2011, Homefront in 2013, and Mechanic: Resurrection in 2016. He further expanded his profile by starring as Lee Christmas in The Expendables franchise from 2010 to 2023 and playing Deckard Shaw in the Fast & Furious franchise from 2013 to 2023, including the 2019 spin-off Hobbs & Shaw, which he co-produced.

In addition to traditional action roles, Statham demonstrated comedic talent in the 2015 action comedy Spy, earning a Critics' Choice Award nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy. His work extends to voice acting in documentaries such as Thai Boxing: A Fighting Chance and Truth in 24, as well as the animated feature Gnomeo & Juliet. Critics have frequently highlighted his kinetic physical performances and screen presence, with commentators noting his distinct impact on contemporary action cinema.

In recent years, Statham has continued to star in high-grossing major releases, including the sci-fi action films The Meg in 2018 and Meg 2: The Trench in 2023, alongside Wrath of Man in 2021 and The Beekeeper in 2024. In 2022, he expanded his industry involvement by establishing his own production company, Punch Palace Productions.
