Edward Norton

Edward Harrison Norton is an American actor and filmmaker born on August 18, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Columbia, Maryland. He attended Yale College, where he studied history and Japanese, acted in university productions, and was a competitive rower. After graduating in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts, he worked for his grandfather's company, Enterprise Community Partners, in Osaka, Japan. He subsequently moved to New York City to pursue an acting career, supporting himself with odd jobs, studying method acting under Terry Schreiber, and performing in off-Broadway theatrical productions.

Norton gained widespread recognition and critical acclaim with his film debut in the 1996 drama Primal Fear. His performance as Aaron Stampler earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award nomination. That same year, he appeared in The People vs. Larry Flynt and Everyone Says I Love You. In 1998, he starred in Rounders and portrayed a redeemed neo-Nazi in American History X, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He followed this by playing the narrator in the 1999 film Fight Club, which went on to earn a cult following.

In 2000, Norton made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy Keeping the Faith, in which he also starred. In 2003, he co-founded the production company Class 5 Films alongside Stuart Blumberg and Bill Migliore. Throughout the early 2000s, Norton appeared in films such as the heist drama The Score, the biographical film Frida, the crime drama 25th Hour, and the heist movie The Italian Job. His major commercial successes during this period included the horror film Red Dragon and Ridley Scott's historical epic Kingdom of Heaven.

Norton continued taking on prominent lead roles, starring as a man claiming to be a cowboy in Down in the Valley, a magician in The Illusionist, and a bacteriologist in The Painted Veil, a film he also co-produced. He subsequently featured in major commercial and critical projects, including main roles in productions such as The Incredible Hulk, The Bourne Legacy, Moonrise Kingdom, and The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Over his career, Norton has earned nominations for four Academy Awards, two BAFTA Awards, and two Emmy Awards. His accolades include an Actor Award, two Critics' Choice Awards, and two Satellite Awards. He earned Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in Birdman and A Complete Unknown. His other projects include directing and acting in the crime film Motherless Brooklyn, starring in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and appearing in The Invite.

Beyond his film career, Norton is an environmental activist and social entrepreneur. He serves as a trustee for Enterprise Community Partners, an affordable housing non-profit co-founded by his maternal grandfather. He is also the president of the American branch of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust and serves as the UN Goodwill Ambassador for Biodiversity.
