Jon Stewart

Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, known professionally as Jon Stewart, was born on November 28, 1962, in New York City. He is an American comedian, writer, producer, director, political commentator, actor, and television host. He is best known for hosting the satirical news program The Daily Show on Comedy Central from 1999 to 2015, a role he reprised on a part-time basis starting in 2024.

Stewart grew up in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, with his mother, Marian, a teacher and educational consultant, and his father, Donald Leibowitz, an energy coordinator. After graduating from Lawrence High School in 1980, he attended the College of William & Mary, playing three seasons on the varsity soccer team and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology in 1984. Before pursuing entertainment, Stewart worked in various occupations, including as a bartender, caterer, busboy, puppeteer for children with disabilities, and contingency planner for the New Jersey Department of Human Services.

Moving to New York City in 1986, Stewart made his stand-up comedy debut at The Bitter End in 1987 and became a regular performer at the Comedy Cellar. He secured his first television writing job on Caroline's Comedy Hour in 1989 and co-hosted Short Attention Span Theater. Stewart subsequently hosted You Wrote It, You Watch It and The Jon Stewart Show on MTV, which later entered syndication before ending in 1995. During the late 1990s, he appeared in films such as Playing by Heart, The Faculty, Big Daddy, and Death to Smoochy, guest-starred on television sitcoms, hosted the UK program Where's Elvis This Week?, and published his first book, Naked Pictures of Famous People (1998).

In 1999, Stewart became the host, writer, and co-executive producer of The Daily Show. Under his leadership, the program earned wide popularity and critical acclaim for its satirical coverage of politics and news media. Outside the show, Stewart co-authored the bestselling books America (The Book) in 2004 and Earth (The Book) in 2010, hosted the 78th and 80th Academy Awards, and launched Busboy Productions. He served as an executive producer for shows including The Colbert Report, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

After leaving The Daily Show in 2015, Stewart engaged in sustained public advocacy for 9/11 first responders and war veterans, advocating for the passage of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund Act permanent authorization and the Honoring our PACT Act of 2022. He hosted The Problem with Jon Stewart on Apple TV+ from 2021 to 2023, and returned to The Daily Show in February 2024 as a Monday host and executive producer. Over his career, Stewart has received 25 Primetime Emmy Awards, 2 Grammy Awards, 5 Peabody Awards, the New York City Bronze Medallion, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
