He rose to prominence as a child actor in the 1990s before establishing himself in major studio features throughout the 2000s. He achieved international recognition for his portrayal of Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (2001–2003). Over his career, he has earned two Saturn Awards, an Actor Award, a Critics' Choice Award, and an Empire Award, as well as a nomination for a Daytime Emmy Award.
Wood was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Debbie and Warren Wood, who operated a delicatessen. He is of English, Danish, Irish, and German descent, and was raised Catholic alongside an older brother and a younger sister. At age seven, he began modeling and taking piano lessons. He appeared in elementary school stage productions of The Sound of Music and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In 1989, his parents sold their delicatessen and his family moved to Los Angeles to allow him to pursue acting, where he attended Laurel Springs School.
Wood made his film debut with a minor role in Back to the Future Part II (1989) and appeared in the music video for Paula Abdul's song Forever Your Girl. His early role in Avalon (1990) gained him professional attention, leading to parts in Paradise, Radio Flyer, and Forever Young. Throughout his youth, he took on prominent roles in films including The Adventures of Huck Finn, The Good Son, The War, North, Flipper, and The Ice Storm. In the late 1990s, he starred in Deep Impact and The Faculty.
Wood achieved global acclaim when he was cast as Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's film adaptations of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, starring in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). He later reprised the role in the 2012 feature film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Following the trilogy, Wood starred in a variety of feature films, including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Sin City, Everything Is Illuminated, Green Street, Bobby, and I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore. His later film credits include Come to Daddy, No Man of God, and The Toxic Avenger. On television, Wood starred in the comedy series Wilfred, the mystery series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and Yellowjackets.
Wood has worked extensively as a voice actor, providing voices for Mumble in Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two, Wirt in Over the Garden Wall, the title character in 9, and Spyro the Dragon in The Legend of Spyro game trilogy. Beyond acting, Wood founded Simian Records in 2005 and co-founded the horror film production company SpectreVision in 2010. He is also a disc jockey who tours with Zach Cowie under the name Wooden Wisdom.
