Luke Evans

Luke George Evans, born on April 15, 1979, is a Welsh actor and singer recognized for his work across musical theater, mainstream feature films, and television. After building a foundational career on stage in London, he transitioned to screen acting, achieving widespread public recognition in major film franchises and adaptations. Among his best-known projects are Fast & Furious 6, Peter Jackson's cinematic trilogy adaptation of The Hobbit, and the live-action remake of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Beyond screen acting, he has released studio music and achieved recognition in high-profile theatrical productions.

Evans was born in Pontypool, Wales, as the only child of Yvonne and David Evans, and was raised in Aberbargoed. He grew up within the Jehovah's Witnesses faith until he departed from both the religious community and his formal schooling at the age of sixteen. Moving to Cardiff at seventeen, he began private vocal instruction with Louise Ryan. In 1997, he secured a scholarship to study at the London Studio Centre in Kings Cross, successfully completing his studies in 2000.

From 2000 to 2008, Evans performed regularly in London's West End and fringe circuit, appearing in musicals such as La Cava, Taboo, Rent, Miss Saigon, and Avenue Q. A prominent turning point occurred in 2008 when he portrayed Vincent in the Donmar Warehouse production of Small Change, directed by Peter Gill. The performance earned him an Evening Standard Award nomination for Outstanding Newcomer and drew attention from international casting directors. He followed this with a role as Yves Montand in Piaf. At age thirty, Evans secured his debut screen role as the Greek god Apollo in the 2010 film Clash of the Titans, rapidly leading to parts in Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, Robin Hood, and Tamara Drewe.

Through the early 2010s, Evans established himself in feature films, appearing in the action drama Blitz, the independent project Flutter, the action reimagining The Three Musketeers as Aramis, Tarsem Singh's Immortals as Zeus, and the thriller The Raven as Detective Emmett Fields. He also starred in the psychological horror release No One Lives. He achieved global prominence portraying Bard the Bowman in the final two installments of The Hobbit trilogy and playing antagonist Owen Shaw in Fast & Furious 6. He subsequently took on the titular lead in Dracula Untold, joined the ensemble of High-Rise, and co-starred in the 2016 thriller The Girl on the Train.

In 2017, Evans played Gaston in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast and psychologist William Moulton Marston in Professor Marston and the Wonder Women. His television work includes starring as newspaper illustrator John Schuyler Moore in the drama series The Alienist from 2018 to 2020 and playing Lars Lee in Nine Perfect Strangers in 2021. He also featured in the war film Midway and played the Coachman in the 2022 live-action Pinocchio. Expanding into recording, he released his debut studio album, At Last, in November 2019.

Evans published his memoir, Boy from the Valleys: My Unexpected Journey, through Ebury Books in 2024, detailing his upbringing, early music competitions, and creative career. He later made his Broadway debut portraying Dr. Frank-N-Furter in a 2026 revival of The Rocky Horror Show, which earned him a Tony Award nomination. His career honors also include being listed among GQ's best-dressed British men in 2015 and receiving the Man of the Year award at the ninth annual Virgin Atlantic Attitude Awards.
