Born on June 28, 1966, in Evanston, Illinois, he was raised in an Irish Catholic family. His parents were Richard J. "Dick" Cusack, a writer, actor, producer, and documentary filmmaker, and Ann Paula "Nancy" Cusack, a former mathematics teacher and political activist. Raised alongside four siblings, including acting sisters Ann and Joan, Cusack graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1984 and attended New York University for one year before leaving to pursue his career.
Cusack entered film acting in the early 1980s, making early appearances in the short educational film Why Is It Always Me? and theatrical releases such as Class and Sixteen Candles. He made a major breakthrough at age sixteen starring in Rob Reiner's comedy The Sure Thing in 1985. Throughout the late 1980s, Cusack appeared in coming-of-age and ensemble projects, including Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, Stand by Me, Eight Men Out, and Tapeheads.
