He attended Dulwich College and began performing in school plays before joining the National Youth Theatre at age 18. He later trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) before leaving early after being cast in his breakthrough film role.

Ejiofor made his feature film debut in Steven Spielberg's 1997 historical drama Amistad. He subsequently achieved widespread critical recognition for his lead role in Stephen Frears' thriller Dirty Pretty Things (2002). Throughout the 2000s, Ejiofor built a diverse filmography with memorable roles in Love Actually, Kinky Boots, Serenity, Children of Men, and American Gangster. In 2008, he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor for his stage performance as Othello. His performance in 2013's 12 Years a Slave earned him the BAFTA Award for Best Actor along with Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Karl Mordo in Doctor Strange (2016) and voiced Scar in the 2019 remake of The Lion King.

Directing and Recent Work

In addition to acting, Ejiofor made his feature directorial debut with the 2019 drama The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, which he adapted from William Kamkwamba's memoir and co-starred in. He followed this with his second directorial effort, Rob Peace (2024). In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the dramatic arts, Ejiofor was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2008 and elevated to Commander (CBE) in 2015.
