Mary J. Blige

Mary Jane Blige is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and entrepreneur. Often referred to by the honorifics "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" and "Queen of R&B," she is widely recognized for her contributions to music and film. Her accolades include nine Grammy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, four American Music Awards, twelve NAACP Image Awards, and twelve Billboard Music Awards. Across her career, she has released 15 studio albums, four of which reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart.

Blige was born on January 11, 1971, in the Bronx, New York City, to Cora, a nurse, and Thomas Blige, a jazz musician. She spent her early childhood in Richmond Hill, Georgia, where she sang in a Pentecostal church, before returning to New York to live in the Schlobohm Housing Projects in Yonkers. Following her parents' divorce, the family subsisted on her mother's earnings. Influenced by singers such as Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, and Gladys Knight, Blige left high school during her junior year to pursue a musical career.

In 1988, Blige recorded an impromptu cover tape that led to an introduction to Uptown Records executive Andre Harrell. Signed to the label in 1989 at age 18 as a backup vocalist, she became Uptown's youngest and first female artist. Working with record producer Sean Combs, she released her debut album, What's the 411?, in July 1992. The record introduced a mix of R&B and hip hop into mainstream pop culture, peaked at number six on the Billboard 200, and earned two Soul Train Music Awards.

Her debut was followed by a 1993 remix album that popularized featuring rappers on R&B tracks. In November 1994, Blige released her second studio album, My Life, which reached number seven on the Billboard 200 and spent eight weeks atop the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Both of her first two albums were later ranked among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. During this period, she also recorded successful soundtrack singles, including "Not Gon' Cry" for Waiting to Exhale, and won her first Grammy Award in 1996 for her collaboration with Method Man.

Blige released her third album, Share My World, in 1997, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned an American Music Award. She followed this with Mary in 1999, which featured a 1970s and 1980s adult contemporary-tinged soul style, and No More Drama in 2001, which included the chart-topping single "Family Affair". Three additional albums—Love & Life (2003), The Breakthrough (2005), and Growing Pains (2007)—also topped the Billboard 200 chart.

Alongside her music career, Blige established herself as an actress. For her performance and songwriting in the 2017 film Mudbound, she received two Academy Award nominations, becoming the first person nominated for acting and songwriting in the same year. Her screen acting includes films such as Rock of Ages, Black Nativity, Respect, and Rob Peace, along with main roles in television series such as The Umbrella Academy and Power Book II: Ghost. Her honors include a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018 and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024.
