Fan Bingbing

Fan Bingbing is an actress from China who achieved widespread recognition after performing in the costume drama My Fair Princess. She went on to gain significant acclaim in mainstream cinema, television, and art-house features. Between 2013 and 2017, she was named the top-earning figure on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list, having maintained a position in its top ten every year starting in 2006. In 2017, she was featured on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people.

Born in the coastal city of Qingdao, Fan relocated to Yantai at age six. Her paternal grandfather served as a high-ranking naval air force officer, and her grandmother selected her Chinese given name to honor the family's maritime connection. Her father was a demobilized naval serviceman who later operated a clothing business with her mother, a former Red Guard performer who managed Fan's early music training in flute and piano. During her childhood, Fan spent considerable time in the care of her maternal grandfather. She also has a younger brother, Fan Chengcheng, born in 1999. In high school, Fan survived a car collision in 1995 that delayed her studies; subsequently, she entered the Shanghai Xie Jin-Hengtong School of Arts after being noticed by its founder, becoming one of its youngest students at fifteen.

Fan made her television debut in Powerful Woman in 1997. Her performance in My Fair Princess soon established her fame across Chinese-speaking regions. Shortly thereafter, she experienced a legal disagreement regarding her contract with showrunner Chiung Yao, which was resolved through court-mediated monetary compensation. After working under manager Wang Jinghua, she joined Huayi Brothers in 2001. Her cinematic breakthrough arrived with Feng Xiaogang's 2003 movie Cell Phone, the year's highest-grossing domestic release, earning her the Hundred Flowers Award for Best Actress.

In 2007, Fan departed Huayi Brothers to form her own single-person agency, Fan Bingbing Studio, alongside manager Mu Xiaoguang. She established a fruitful artistic partnership with director Li Yu, starring in independent projects including Lost in Beijing, Buddha Mountain, Double Xposure, and Ever Since We Love. Her portrayal in Buddha Mountain earned her Best Actress honors at the 23rd Tokyo International Film Festival. She later reunited with director Feng Xiaogang for the 2016 feature I Am Not Madame Bovary, a performance that secured her both the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actress and the Silver Shell for Best Actress.

Alongside her art-house work, Fan appeared in television series such as The Proud Twins, Eight Heroes, and The Empress of China, while also producing dramas like Rouge Snow and Jintai-Pan. Globally, she took on roles in features including My Way, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The 355, Ice Road: Vengeance, and Mother Bhumi, the latter earning her the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actress. She also served on the jury for the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival.

In 2018, Fan's career in mainland China faced a major disruption due to a tax evasion case, resulting in a fine and tax penalty totaling CN¥883 million (US$127 million) and her blacklisting from the domestic entertainment industry. Following these events, Fan redirected her domestic focus toward her personal brand, Fan Beauty, while continuing to pursue acting opportunities overseas.
