Feng Xiaogang

Feng Xiaogang is a Chinese filmmaker and actor born on March 18, 1958, in Beijing. He became a prominent figure in the mainland Chinese film industry by pioneering the commercial Chinese New Year comedy film genre. Over his career, he expanded from popular comedic works to direct major historical dramas, war films, and epics, while also earning acclaim for select acting roles.

Feng was raised in Beijing by his mother, a factory medical worker, following his parents' divorce when he was a toddler. His father was a university professor who had been designated a rightist. After high school, Feng entered military service and worked as a stage designer for an arts troupe. His seven-year tenure ended with his discharge in 1984, an experience that later served as inspiration for his creative projects. After briefly working for a municipal construction company, he joined the Beijing Television Arts Center as an art designer in 1985.

In the early 1990s, Feng co-wrote the screenplay for The Dream Factory before making his directorial debut with the romantic film Lost My Love in 1994. After censorship obstacles disrupted three subsequent projects developed with writer Wang Shuo, Feng pivoted toward comedy. Partnering regularly with actor Ge You, he achieved major commercial success with popular comedic releases such as Dream Factory, Be There or Be Square, Sorry Baby, and Big Shot's Funeral, establishing himself as a box-office force in China.

During the 2000s, Feng broadened his directorial scope. He directed the drama Cell Phone in 2003, followed by the hit action drama A World Without Thieves in 2004, which earned him a Golden Horse Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. He continued with the historical drama The Banquet in 2006, the successful war film Assembly in 2007, and the romantic comedy If You Are the One in 2008, launching a popular film franchise.

Feng maintained a prolific output through the 2010s. He directed the earthquake drama Aftershock in 2010 and the historical feature Back to 1942 in 2012. In 2014, he served as chief director of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala and opened a major movie-themed development project in Haikou. He achieved critical acclaim for directing I Am Not Madame Bovary in 2016, winning the Golden Horse Award for Best Director. As an actor, he won the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor for starring in Mr. Six in 2015. He subsequently directed the military-themed drama Youth in 2017 and the romantic drama Only Cloud Knows in 2019.

In his personal life, Feng was first married to Zhang Di, with whom he has a daughter, and later married actress Xu Fan in 1999, with whom he adopted a daughter. In 2018, the production of Cell Phone 2 led to public industry controversies involving tax reporting practices, impacting several associated business entities.
