Chen Kaige

Chen Kaige is a Chinese filmmaker born on August 12, 1952, in Beijing, China, with family roots in Changle, Fuzhou. Renowned for his striking visual style and epic narrative approach, he is widely recognized as a prominent figure among the Fifth Generation of Chinese film directors. In addition to his directorial career, he has occasionally worked as an actor, appearing in Bernardo Bertolucci's feature The Last Emperor as well as several of his own cinematic projects.

Chen was raised in a creative household where his father, Chen Huai'ai, was a well-known director and his mother, Liu Yanchi, worked as a senior screenwriter. During the Cultural Revolution, he became a member of the Red Guards and publicly denounced his father—a decision he later expressed regret over, which heavily influenced the themes of his artistic work. In 1969, he worked at the Xishuangbanna Agricultural Reclamation Bureau before joining the People's Liberation Army in 1970. After his discharge in 1975, he worked at the Beijing Film Printing Factory and subsequently attended the Beijing Film Academy from 1978 to 1982.

Upon graduation, Chen was assigned to Guangxi Film Studio alongside classmate Zhang Yimou. He made his directorial debut with Yellow Earth (1984), a seminal work of Fifth Generation cinema featuring cinematography by Zhang that explored deep national and historical roots. He followed this with The Big Parade (1986) and King of the Children (1987). After receiving an Asian Cultural Council fellowship in 1987, he served as a visiting scholar at New York University Film School. He later directed a 1989 music video for Duran Duran, served on the jury at the 39th Berlin International Film Festival, and released the allegory Life on a String.

Chen gained global recognition with Farewell My Concubine (1993), a drama about two Peking opera performers spanning decades. The project made him the first Chinese director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, alongside securing two Academy Award nominations and the International Federation of Film Critics Award. He followed this success with the period piece Temptress Moon (1996) and the historical drama The Emperor and the Assassin (1999).

In 2002, Chen directed his only English-language thriller, Killing Me Softly, as well as Together, an intimate story about a young violinist that marked the start of his wife Chen Hong serving as his film producer. That year, he also contributed a short to the opening collection of the Cannes Film Festival. He transitioned toward commercial filmmaking with the fantasy wuxia feature The Promise (2005) and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 28th Moscow International Film Festival in 2006.

Chen continued directing major titles, including the Mei Lanfang biopic Forever Enthralled (2008), Sacrifice (2010), and Caught in the Web (2012), which was selected as China's foreign-language Oscar submission. His later works include Monk Comes Down the Mountain (2015) and Legend of the Demon Cat (2017). Since 2019, he has directed and produced various state-backed films, including co-directing The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021), which became China's highest-grossing movie.
