Ge You

Ge You is a prominent Chinese actor born on April 19, 1957. Widely regarded as one of China's most celebrated performers, he is recognized for his distinct bald head, sharp comedic timing, and understated, clever acting style. Over his career, he has achieved significant recognition in both domestic television and international cinema.

Ge grew up in a family connected to the arts and media. His father, Ge Cunzhuang, worked as an actor and appeared in several film productions, while his mother, Shi Wenxin, served as a script editor at the Beijing Film Studio. His younger sister, Ge Jia, pursued higher education in philosophy and German literature before becoming a writer based in the United States. Following his middle school education, Ge worked on a pig farm in the suburbs of Beijing.

At the age of 25, Ge transitioned into acting by joining the Art Troupe of the National Federation of Trade Unions as a stage performer. He made an early screen appearance in 1984 with a minor role in the project Sheng Xia and His Fiancée. Personal-life-wise, Ge met art teacher He Cong in 1985, and the couple married in 1988.

Ge achieved widespread national fame after starring in the 1988 film The Troubleshooters, adapted from a popular novel by Wang Shuo. His performance earned him a nomination for the Golden Rooster Award for Best Actor. He further built his profile through prominent roles on television, including the 1992 sitcom Stories From The Editorial Board and the 1994 series I Love My Family.

International recognition followed when Ge starred in Zhang Yimou's 1994 film To Live, based on the Yu Hua novel. His performance made him the first Asian and first Chinese actor to receive the Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Throughout the 1990s, he appeared in a string of critically well-received films, including Steel Meets Fire, Farewell My Concubine, and The Emperor's Shadow. He also won the Hundred Flowers Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1991 movie The Spring Festival.

Starting in 1997, Ge established a notable and continuous collaboration with director Feng Xiaogang. Their creative partnership produced a wide array of successful films, beginning with The Dream Factory and continuing with Big Shot's Funeral, Cell Phone, A World Without Thieves, and The Banquet. Ge also starred in the film series If You Are the One, which spanned from 2008 to 2023, as well as the 2010 feature Sacrifice.
