Daniel Wu

Daniel Neh-Tsu Wu is a Hong Kong-American actor recognized for his dynamic lead performances in Chinese-language cinema. Since making his screen debut in 1998, he has appeared in more than 60 feature films. Over the course of his career, he has earned three Golden Horse Award nominations and landed major television roles, including starring in the AMC action series Into the Badlands and the Disney+ show American Born Chinese.

Wu was born on September 30, 1974, in Berkeley, California, and raised in Orinda. His family lineage traces back to Shanghai, with his grandparents relocating to Taiwan and Hong Kong before immigrating to the United States in the 1950s. Raised alongside two older sisters—and an older brother who passed away during childhood—Wu grew up in an academic household. His mother earned a doctorate and worked as a university professor, while his father held a master's degree in engineering.

After attending Chinatown cinema screenings with his grandfather, Wu developed a passion for martial arts inspired by performers Jet Li and Donnie Yen, beginning his formal wushu training at age 11. He completed his secondary education at the Head-Royce School before pursuing architecture at the University of Oregon, where he established and coached the university's wushu club in 1994. Alongside taking film classes, he briefly studied at SCI-Arc and worked under architect Michael Rotondi before earning his degree.

In 1997, Wu traveled to Hong Kong to observe the territory's handover. Upon his sister's advice, he took up modeling, which led filmmaker Yonfan to discover him in a print advertisement. Despite having no acting background and lacking Chinese language skills, Wu was persuaded to star in the 1998 film Bishonen. Shortly after, he landed roles in City of Glass—earning a Hong Kong Film Award nomination for best new actor—and Young and Dangerous: The Prequel, subsequently signing with Jackie Chan's management agency.

Wu achieved his career breakthrough in the 1999 action film Gen-X Cops. He followed this with varied projects such as Purple Storm, Peony Pavilion, Love Undercover, and Cop on a Mission. In 2003, he starred in and helped secure financing for Night Corridor, earning a Best Actor nomination at Taiwan's Golden Horse Film Awards. That same year, he contributed to the MTV series Whatever Things! and performed in the stage play The Happy Prince. He later received Hong Kong Film Award nominations for One Nite in Mongkok and New Police Story, winning Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Horse Awards for the latter.

In 2005, Wu formed the mock group Alive, using the experience to write and direct the 2006 mockumentary feature The Heavenly Kings, which won him Best New Director at the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards. He made his English-language debut in the 2011 film Inseparable, later serving as lead actor and executive producer on Into the Badlands from 2015 to 2019. His subsequent projects include motion-capture and voice work in Warcraft (2016), as well as roles in Tomb Raider (2018) and Reminiscence (2021).

Beyond acting, Wu co-founded the online creative community AliveNotDead.com in 2007, endorsed brands including Seiko and L'Oréal, and invested in a Shanghai nightlife venue. He married Lisa S. in South Africa in 2010, and the couple welcomed a daughter in 2013. Following his mother's death in 2014, Wu moved his family back to California to support his father and oversee his daughter's schooling, while maintaining homes in Oakland, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing.
