Cécile de France

Cécile de France is a Belgian actress who initially gained prominence within French cinema before expanding her career to international feature films. Born on July 17, 1975, in Namur, Belgium, she first built a strong reputation through successful French cinematic releases in the early 2000s. She subsequently earned global visibility through prominent roles in prominent international productions across various genres.

Raised in Belgium, she relocated to Paris at the age of seventeen to pursue formal instruction in acting. Her preliminary drama training lasted two years under the guidance of actor Jean Paul Denizon, who worked as an assistant to British theatrical director Peter Brook. Following this foundational instruction, she continued her education from 1995 to 1998 at the acting academy ENSATT (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Techniques du Théâtre) within its Département Comédie, studying first at Rue Blanche in Paris and later in Lyon.

Her professional entry into mainstream cinema was facilitated by talent agent Dominique Besnehard, who discovered her. She quickly secured roles in successful French cinematic releases, notably appearing in the 2001 film L'Art (délicat) de la séduction and following it with a key performance in Irène in 2002. These early projects established her presence in the French film industry and set the stage for further critical and commercial success.

Her international breakthrough occurred following her lead performance in the 2003 horror feature High Tension, which was released under the title Switchblade Romance in the United Kingdom. Her performance attracted the attention of American film producers, leading to her first major role in a United States feature film, the 2004 production Around the World in 80 Days, in which she starred alongside actors Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan.

Throughout her career, she has received notable industry accolades in France. She won a César Award for Most Promising Actress for her role in L'Auberge espagnole (2002) and subsequently received the César Award for Best Supporting Actress for her work in Les Poupées russes (2005). In addition to her acting accolades, she hosted the 39th César Awards ceremony held in 2014.

She has also served in prominent judicial capacities at major international film events. In 2015, she was chosen as a jury member for the Cinéfondation and short film categories at the Cannes Film Festival. Later, she was appointed to the main competition jury for the 68th Berlin International Film Festival.

Her broader international film credits include a lead role in the 2010 film Hereafter, directed by Clint Eastwood, as well as an appearance in the 2019 film The French Dispatch, directed by Wes Anderson. On a personal level, she has two children, Lino and Joy Siron, with her partner, musician Guillaume Siron.
