Mélanie Laurent is a French actress, filmmaker, and singer who has earned international recognition for her work across independent cinema and major Hollywood releases. She has received two César Awards and a Lumière Award throughout her career. Global audiences widely recognize her for her roles in prominent films such as Quentin Tarantino's war movie Inglourious Basterds, the caper film Now You See Me, and the thrillers Operation Finale and 6 Underground.

Laurent was born on 21 February 1983 in Paris, France, where she grew up in the ninth arrondissement. She was raised in an artistic household by her mother Annick, a ballerina, and her father Pierre, a voiceover actor. Her maternal family background includes Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jewish ancestry, and her grandfather survived deportation from Poland during the Nazi occupation. She entered acting at age sixteen after visiting a film set where actor Gérard Depardieu invited her to participate in cinema, leading to her debut role in the 1999 drama The Bridge.

Following early roles in productions such as Summer Things and Days of Glory, Laurent achieved critical breakthrough with the 2006 drama Don't Worry, I'm Fine. Her performance earned her the César Award for Most Promising Actress and the Prix Romy Schneider. That same year, she won an Étoiles d'Or for her work in the comedy Dikkenek. She continued to solidify her position in French cinema with notable roles in the ensemble comedy-drama Paris and the historical feature The Round Up.

She wrote and directed her first short film, De moins en moins, in 2008, followed by her feature directorial debut, The Adopted, in 2011. Her second feature, Respire, was screened at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and she later won a César Award for co-directing the 2015 documentary Tomorrow.
