Born on 1 December 1978, Cottin is the daughter of artist Gilles Cottin and traces her paternal lineage to her great-great-grandfather Paul Cottin, a historian who directed the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. Her mother's family descends from pieds-noirs French citizens who resided in Algeria during the colonial era. Cottin spent part of her childhood in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris before moving to London for her adolescent years. Upon returning to France, she worked as a high school English instructor while simultaneously studying drama at a theater school and performing with the Théâtre du Voyageur troupe.

Cottin began her professional acting trajectory with minor parts across various television programs and films. In 2009, she became a member of the Troupe à Palmade and appeared in a Japanese commercial directed by Wes Anderson alongside Brad Pitt. Her breakthrough arrived in 2013 when she was cast as the lead in Connasse, a Canal+ series featuring short, candid-camera sketches created by Noémie Saglio and Éloïse Lang. The success of the broadcast led to a 2015 feature film adaptation, The Parisian Bitch, Princess of Hearts, which earned Cottin a nomination for the César Award for Most Promising Actress.

In 2015, Cottin secured the starring role of Andréa Martel in the France 2 talent agency drama series Call My Agent!. The show ran for four seasons and reached global audiences via Netflix, earning Cottin an ACS Award for Best Actress. Alongside her work on television, she featured in notable French films, including Baby Bumps, In the Shadow of Iris, The Fabulous Patars, The Mystery of Henri Pick, and The Dazzled.

Cottin transitioned into English-language media with a role in Robert Zemeckis's 2016 thriller Allied. She later joined the cast of the BBC America drama series Killing Eve from 2020 to 2022. Her international film profile expanded significantly in 2021 with co-starring roles alongside Matt Damon in Stillwater and in Ridley Scott's biographical film House of Gucci.

Her subsequent work includes leading the 2023 French drama Toni, en famille, as well as appearing in the historical war drama Golda and Kenneth Branagh's 2022 mystery adaptation A Haunting in Venice.

In her personal life, Cottin has been in a relationship with architect Benjamin Mahon since 2005. The couple, who choose not to marry to maintain personal independence, have two children, a son born in 2009 and a daughter born in August 2015.
