Civil was born in Paris on January 29, 1990. His mother is from Avignon and his father is Tahitian; both worked as university professors of Spanish. Raised with an older sister, he grew up speaking French, English, Spanish, and some Italian. As a child, he was hyperactive and turned to music, sports, and theater to channel his energy. He began acting at age fourteen after enrolling in a drama class, and later briefly attended the drama school Cours Florent.
Civil made his feature film debut in the 2005 comedy Le Cactus, followed by television appearances and a main role in the teen sitcom Trop la Classe!. He earned recognition for his lead role in the 2008 drama Dying or Feeling Better, receiving a Lumiere Award nomination. Over the following years, he worked across theater, television, and film, including roles in Bus Palladium, 15 Lads, and Elles. In 2014, he expanded into English-language projects, playing a bassist in Frank, an urban explorer in As Above, So Below, and appearing in the miniseries Rosemary's Baby.

He subsequently starred in the action film Burn Out and the drama Back to Burgundy. His later projects include roles in The Good Teacher, Beating Hearts, Fiasco, Two Pianos, and the miniseries A Tale of Two Cities.
