Eva Green

Eva Gaëlle Green is a French actress known for her appearances in both independent cinema and major studio productions. Throughout her career, she has frequently portrayed complex, eccentric, and antagonistic characters across film and television. Born in July 1980, she initially gained recognition on the stage in Paris before transitioning to feature films and international screen projects.

Green was raised in France alongside her fraternal twin sister, Joy. She comes from a family with creative artistic backgrounds; her mother, Marlène Jobert, is a French actress and author of Jewish descent, while her father, Walter Green, is a Swedish dental surgeon who also occasionally acted. Her extended family includes a great-grandfather who was a composer, a great-grandmother who worked as a photographer, and relatives in acting and music. She attended the English-speaking American University of Paris and developed a passion for acting in her mid-teens after watching film performances by Isabelle Adjani and Jack Nicholson. She formally studied drama at the Cours Eva Saint Paul in Paris and later completed an acting course at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

Green made her professional acting debut on stage in the 2001 play Jalousie en trois fax, earning a nomination for a Molière Award. She transitioned to screen acting with her feature film debut in Bernardo Bertolucci's drama The Dreamers in 2003, a role that brought her widespread public attention. She subsequently appeared in the French adventure film Arsène Lupin in 2004, followed by her portrayal of Queen Sibylla in Ridley Scott's 2005 historical epic Kingdom of Heaven.

Her international breakthrough came in 2006 when she portrayed Vesper Lynd in the James Bond film Casino Royale. Her performance was widely praised by critics and earned her both the BAFTA Rising Star Award and an Empire Award. Following this role, she starred in several independent and genre feature films, including the fantasy adaptation The Golden Compass in 2007, the science-fiction feature Franklyn in 2008, the drama Cracks in 2009, and the feature Womb in 2010.

During the 2010s, Green took on prominent roles in major action and fantasy productions, portraying Artemisia in 300: Rise of an Empire and Ava Lord in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. She also established an ongoing creative relationship with director Tim Burton, starring in Dark Shadows, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and Dumbo, as well as being cast in his television project Wednesday. In 2019, her performance as an astronaut in the French drama Proxima earned her a nomination for the César Award for Best Actress.

On television, Green starred as Morgan Pendragon in the historical fantasy series Camelot and played Vanessa Ives in the horror drama series Penny Dreadful from 2014 to 2016, receiving a Golden Globe Award nomination for the latter. In addition to her acting work, Green was named a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2018 and has represented luxury brands such as Bulgari and Roger Vivier as a brand ambassador.
