Tim Burton

Timothy Walter Burton, born August 25, 1958, is an American director and animator recognized for introducing gothic aesthetics to mainstream Hollywood. His films frequently combine dark fantasy and gothic horror with surreal, whimsical elements. Over his career, he has earned an Emmy Award alongside nominations for two Academy Awards, a Golden Globe, and three BAFTAs. He was also honored with a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice International Film Festival in 2007 and received France's Order of Arts and Letters in 2010.

Raised in Burbank, California, Burton was born to Jean, who ran a cat-themed gift shop, and William Burton, a former minor league baseball player employed by the local parks department. During his youth, Burton spent time drawing, painting, and creating short films in his backyard using 8 mm film and basic stop-motion techniques, including an adaptation of an H. G. Wells novel at age thirteen. He attended local public schools, played water polo in high school, and studied character animation at the California Institute of the Arts from 1976 to 1979.

Burton's creative style was shaped by classic Universal monster films, Hammer horror features, Japanese monster movies, and Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion work, as well as authors such as Dr. Seuss and Roald Dahl. His student animation led to an apprenticeship at Walt Disney Productions, where he worked on concept art and design for films like The Fox and the Hound, Tron, and The Black Cauldron. While at Disney, he directed the short films Vincent, Hansel and Gretel, and Frankenweenie, the latter of which led to his departure from the studio.

Following his time at Disney, Burton directed his feature debut, Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), establishing his long-running creative partnership with composer Danny Elfman. He followed this with the successful horror comedy Beetlejuice (1988), which won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and inspired an animated television series. Burton was then chosen to direct Batman (1989), casting Michael Keaton in the lead role alongside Jack Nicholson. The film became a major global success, winning an Academy Award for Best Art Direction and influencing future superhero productions.

Burton directed Edward Scissorhands (1990), a personal project starring Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder inspired by his suburban youth. He subsequently helmed Batman Returns (1992) and produced the stop-motion feature The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), which was derived from a poem he wrote. During the remainder of the 1990s, he directed projects such as the biographical film Ed Wood (1994), the science fiction comedy Mars Attacks! (1996), and the supernatural film Sleepy Hollow (1999).

Over the next two decades, Burton directed a wide range of films, including Planet of the Apes (2001), Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Corpse Bride (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Alice in Wonderland (2010), Dark Shadows (2012), Frankenweenie (2012), Big Eyes (2014), Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016), and Dumbo (2019).

In addition to his film projects, Burton has published written works, including The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy & Other Stories (1997). His recent projects include directing episodes of the Netflix series Wednesday, which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for directing, and the feature film Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).
