Spike Lee

Shelton Jackson "Spike" Lee is an American filmmaker and actor known for exploring topics such as race relations, issues within the Black community, urban crime, poverty, and the role of media. Through his production company, 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, Lee has produced more than 35 films. His body of work spans narrative feature films, documentary projects, and concert films.

Born on March 20, 1957, in Atlanta, Georgia, Lee grew up in Brooklyn, New York, after his family moved during his childhood. His mother, Jacqueline Carroll, was an arts and literature teacher, while his father, William James Edwards Lee III, was a jazz musician and composer. Lee attended John Dewey High School and earned a B.A. in mass communication from Morehouse College in 1979. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in film and television from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 1982.

Lee launched his career with his master's thesis film, Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads (1983), which earned a Student Academy Award. He made his feature directorial debut with the comedy She's Gotta Have It (1986), which he wrote, directed, produced, edited, and starred in. He followed this with School Daze (1988) and achieved a major breakthrough with Do the Right Thing (1989), a critical success focusing on racial tension in a Brooklyn neighborhood. The film earned Lee an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

During the 1990s, Lee directed a wide range of feature films and documentaries. He collaborated with Denzel Washington on Mo' Better Blues (1990) and the biographical epic Malcolm X (1992). His other directorial works from the decade include Jungle Fever (1991), Crooklyn (1994), Clockers (1995), Girl 6 (1996), Get on the Bus (1996), He Got Game (1998), and Summer of Sam (1999). In 1997, Lee released the documentary 4 Little Girls, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature Film.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Lee directed projects including the satire Bamboozled (2000), the drama 25th Hour (2002), She Hate Me (2004), and the heist thriller Inside Man (2006). He also directed Miracle at St. Anna (2008), Red Hook Summer (2012), Oldboy (2013), and Chi-Raq (2015). For television, he directed the documentary series When the Levees Broke (2006), which won two Primetime Emmy Awards, and If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise (2010).

Lee achieved major recognition with BlacKkKlansman (2018), winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Cannes Film Festival Grand Prix. His subsequent projects include the concert film American Utopia (2020), the drama Da 5 Bloods (2020), and Highest 2 Lowest (2025). Over his career, Lee has acted in eleven of his feature films.

Lee's honors include an Honorary BAFTA Award, an Honorary César, the Academy Honorary Award, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, and the National Medal of Arts. Five of his films have been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry.
