Clint Eastwood

Clinton Eastwood Jr. was born on May 31, 1930, in San Francisco, California, to Ruth and Clinton Eastwood. Raised alongside his younger sister, Jeanne, his family relocated several times during the 1930s before settling in Piedmont, California. He attended local schools and graduated from Oakland Technical High School in 1949. Before embarking on an acting career, he worked various odd jobs and was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 during the Korean War, serving until his discharge in 1953.

Eastwood's acting career began in the mid-1950s after signing a contract with Universal-International. He made his film debut with a minor role in Revenge of the Creature (1955) and appeared in small parts in films such as Francis in the Navy, Tarantula, and The First Traveling Saleslady. During this period, he also took on guest roles in television series including Reader's Digest, Highway Patrol, Death Valley Days, and Maverick.

His major career breakthrough came in 1958 when he was cast as Rowdy Yates in the CBS Western series Rawhide. The show became a rating success, ranking among the top ten television series in the country. Eastwood starred in the program until its cancellation during the 1965–1966 season. While working on Rawhide, he made his initial attempt at directing by filming promotional trailers for the show.

In the mid-1960s, Eastwood achieved international fame playing the "Man with No Name" in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy: A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966). These spaghetti Westerns established him as a leading cinematic star and iconic antihero. During this era, he also starred in the non-Western anthology film The Witches (1967).

During the 1970s and 1980s, Eastwood gained further prominence starring as Harry Callahan in five Dirty Harry films. His largest commercial hits included Every Which Way but Loose (1978) and Any Which Way You Can (1980). His filmography features Westerns like Hang 'Em High (1968), The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976), and Pale Rider (1985), as well as Where Eagles Dare (1968), Escape from Alcatraz (1979), Heartbreak Ridge (1986), In the Line of Fire (1993), and The Bridges of Madison County (1995). Later starring roles include Gran Torino (2008), The Mule (2018), and Cry Macho (2021).

In 1967, Eastwood established Malpaso Productions, which has produced most of his American films. He developed an acclaimed directorial career, winning Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture for Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004). He directed films without appearing in them, including Mystic River (2003), Letters from Iwo Jima (2006), and Juror #2 (2024), along with biographical dramas such as Changeling (2008), Invictus (2009), American Sniper (2014), Sully (2016), and Richard Jewell (2019).

Eastwood's accolades include four Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, three César Awards, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, the Honorary Palme d'Or, and an AFI Life Achievement Award. France honored him as Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and with the Legion of Honour. Additionally, Eastwood served two years as mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, after his election in 1986.
