Lara Flynn Boyle

Lara Flynn Boyle is an American actress born on March 24, 1970, in Davenport, Iowa. She is best known for portraying Donna Hayward in the television series Twin Peaks (1990–1991) and Assistant District Attorney Helen Gamble in the ABC legal drama series The Practice (1997–2003).

Boyle was raised in Chicago, Illinois, and Wisconsin by her mother, Sally Flynn, who worked as a clerical worker, assistant, and manager, and her father, Michael L. Boyle. Her paternal grandfather was U.S. Representative Charles A. Boyle, and she has Irish, German, and Italian heritage. Named after a character in Boris Pasternak's novel Doctor Zhivago, Boyle was diagnosed with dyslexia around the age of six when her father left. She later graduated from the Chicago Academy for the Arts.

Boyle began her screen career in 1986 with a small part in the teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off, though her scenes were deleted from the final cut. She went on to appear in the miniseries Amerika (1987), guest roles on Jack and Mike and Sable, and the horror film Poltergeist III (1988). In 1989, she gained international prominence when David Lynch cast her as Donna Hayward in Twin Peaks. The mystery series premiered on ABC in April 1990 and became one of the year's top-rated shows, running for 30 episodes before its cancellation in 1991. While on the show, she was also featured on the cover of Rolling Stone in October 1990 alongside her co-stars.

During and immediately following her time on Twin Peaks, Boyle appeared in numerous films, including The Rookie (1990), The Dark Backward (1991), Mobsters (1991), Wayne's World (1992), Red Rock West (1993), and The Temp (1993). Although invited to reprise her role in the 1992 feature film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, scheduling conflicts with projects such as Where the Day Takes You, Wayne's World, and Equinox prevented her participation. Throughout the mid-to-late 1990s, her film credits expanded to include Threesome (1994), Baby's Day Out (1994), Cafe Society (1995), Afterglow (1997), and Todd Solondz's Happiness (1998).

In 1997, after auditioning for Ally McBeal, creator David E. Kelley cast Boyle as Helen Gamble in The Practice. She starred on the series until 2003 and earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her performance, alongside several Screen Actors Guild ensemble cast nominations. She also made crossover and guest appearances as Helen Gamble and Tally Cupp on Ally McBeal. In 2002, Boyle starred in the feature film Men in Black II as the villainous alien Serleena.

Following her departure from The Practice, Boyle took on recurring and guest roles in television, including a seven-episode stint as Monica Mancuso on Las Vegas in 2005, a role in the television film Shades of Black: The Conrad Black Story, guest appearances on Huff and Law & Order, and roles in independent films such as Life Is Hot in Cracktown (2009), Baby on Board (2009), Cougar Hunting (2010), Hansel & Gretel Get Baked (2013), and Lucky Dog (2015). After a five-year break from acting, she returned in 2020 to star as Grace in the film Death in Texas.
