Over his career, Bellows has built a diverse body of work spanning independent films, major studio releases, stage plays, and primetime television series.

Raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Bellows attended Magee Secondary School alongside future actor Carrie-Anne Moss. After graduating, he pursued dramatic arts training at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles, California. He subsequently relocated to New York City to start his career, briefly working as a hotel doorman at The Royalton Hotel while auditioning for early performance roles.

Bellows began his professional career on stage, earning notice for his performance in the 1990 play A Snake in the Vein, followed by an off-Broadway appearance in Flaubert's Latest in 1992. He made his television debut in a 1991 episode of Law & Order and landed his first lead film role in the 1994 crime drama Love and a .45 alongside Renée Zellweger. That same year, he achieved a major breakthrough after being cast as the pivotal character Tommy in Frank Darabont's film adaptation The Shawshank Redemption.

In 1997, Bellows gained further widespread recognition when he joined the cast of Fox's legal comedy-drama series Ally McBeal as romantic lead Billy Thomas. His performance as part of the show's ensemble earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award. He left the regular cast during the third season, returning for guest appearances. He later starred as CIA agent Matt Callan in the CBS drama series The Agency in 2001, and subsequently held recurring roles on prominent television series including Smallville, Patriot, American Gods, Chucky, and Alert: Missing Persons Unit.

Alongside his acting work, Bellows expanded into feature film acting and producing. His notable film appearances include roles in The Weather Man (2005), House at the End of the Street (2012), and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019). As a television producer, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award and a Peabody Award for executive producing the 2010 HBO biographical drama Temple Grandin. In 2013, he produced, starred in, co-wrote, and co-directed the feature film 3 Days in Havana.

In his personal life, Bellows married American actress Rya Kihlstedt after meeting her in the early 1990s. The couple raised two children together before separating in 2021.
