Al Pacino

Alfredo James Pacino is an American actor known for his intense performances on stage and screen. Widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, his career spans more than five decades. He achieved the Triple Crown of Acting by winning an Academy Award, a Tony Award, and an Emmy Award. His major honors include the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the AFI Life Achievement Award, the National Medal of Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Sam Wanamaker Award. Films featuring Pacino have grossed over $3 billion worldwide.

Born in East Harlem, New York City, Pacino was raised in the South Bronx by his mother and maternal grandparents following his parents' divorce. He developed an early interest in acting when his mother took him to the movies as a child. After attending Herman Ridder Junior High School and gaining admission to the High School of Performing Arts, he left home to pursue an acting career. Pacino worked various low-paying jobs while performing in theatrical basement plays. He trained at HB Studio under mentor Charlie Laughton and later studied method acting at the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg.

Pacino began his professional acting career on stage, performing in off-Broadway and regional productions. In 1968, he won an Obie Award for his role in The Indian Wants the Bronx, leading manager Martin Bregman to discover him. He made his Broadway debut in 1969 in Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?, winning his first Tony Award. Following a brief film appearance in Me, Natalie, Pacino earned acclaim in his first lead film role portraying a heroin addict in The Panic in Needle Park.

Pacino achieved worldwide stardom when director Francis Ford Coppola cast him as Michael Corleone in The Godfather, a role he reprised in two sequels. The performance earned him his first Academy Award nomination. During the 1970s, he garnered further Oscar nominations for his roles in Serpico, The Godfather Part II, Dog Day Afternoon, and ...And Justice for All. He also won a second Tony Award for his performance in the play The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Pacino starred in defining film roles, including Cuban drug lord Tony Montana in Scarface. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Scent of a Woman. His other Oscar-nominated performances include Dick Tracy, Glengarry Glen Ross, and The Irishman. Additional prominent film credits include Carlito's Way, Heat, Donnie Brasco, The Devil's Advocate, The Insider, Insomnia, Ocean's Thirteen, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and House of Gucci.

Pacino expanded into directing with projects such as the documentary Looking for Richard, as well as Chinese Coffee, Wilde Salomé, and Salomé. On television, he won Primetime Emmy Awards for his roles in the HBO productions Angels in America and You Don't Know Jack, and later starred in the series Hunters. Pacino published his memoir, Sonny Boy, in 2024 and has served as co-president of the Actors Studio since 1995.
