Antonio Banderas

Born on August 10, 1960, José Antonio Domínguez Bandera is a Spanish actor recognized professionally as Antonio Banderas. He is widely known for his performances across various film genres, as well as his work on stage and television. Over the course of his career, he has earned major accolades, including a Cannes Film Festival Award and a Goya Award, alongside nominations for an Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and a Tony Award.

Raised in Málaga, Andalusia, Banderas is the son of Civil Guard officer José Domínguez Prieto and schoolteacher Ana Bandera Gallego, and he has a younger brother named Francisco. During his childhood, he aimed to become a professional football player, but a foot fracture at age 15 led him to pursue the performing arts instead. He studied at the ARA Theatre School and the College of Dramatic Art in Málaga, eventually performing on local stages and streets before earning a place with the Spanish National Theatre.

While active in Spanish theater during the post-dictatorship movement known as La Movida Madrileña, Banderas was discovered by filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. He made his movie debut in Almodóvar's 1982 project Labyrinth of Passion, initiating a long-running artistic collaboration. The pair worked together on prominent 1980s titles such as Matador, Law of Desire, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!. Decades later, their ongoing creative partnership yielded films like The Skin I Live In and Pain and Glory, the latter of which earned Banderas the Cannes Film Festival Best Actor Award and an Oscar nomination.

Banderas transitioned to American cinema in the early 1990s with the drama The Mambo Kings, despite speaking minimal English at the time. He reached wider mainstream audiences in Philadelphia, followed by appearances in book-to-screen adaptations including The House of the Spirits and Interview with the Vampire. During the mid-to-late 1990s, he established himself as a prominent Hollywood lead with performances in Desperado, Assassins, the musical film Evita, and the action feature The Mask of Zorro, earning Golden Globe nominations for Evita and Zorro.

Throughout the 2000s and beyond, Banderas expanded into major film franchises, portraying Gregorio Cortez in the Spy Kids trilogy and reprising his role as Zorro in The Legend of Zorro. He gained significant commercial success voicing Puss in Boots across the Shrek animated franchise and its spin-off films, providing the voice acting for both English and Spanish releases. His later adventure and action screen appearances include roles in The Expendables 3, Uncharted, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

In addition to screen acting, Banderas made his Broadway debut in the 2003 musical revival Nine, earning a Tony nomination along with Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards. On television, he received Primetime Emmy nominations for portraying Pancho Villa in the HBO movie And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself and depicting painter Pablo Picasso in the series Genius. Behind the camera, Banderas made his feature directorial debut with the comedy Crazy in Alabama, later directing his second feature film, Summer Rain.
