He is best known for starring as Jesse Katsopolis on the ABC sitcom Full House, a role he played from 1987 to 1995 and later reprised as an executive producer on the sequel series Fuller House.
Stamos was born in Cypress, California, to William "Bill" Stamos, a Greek-American restaurateur, and Loretta Phillips. In his youth, he worked in his father's restaurants in the Orange County area. He attended John F. Kennedy High School, playing in the marching band. A fan of The Beach Boys since age 15, he skipped his first college semester at Cypress College in 1981 to pursue acting with his father's support, securing his first television role three weeks later.
After debuting on General Hospital in 1982, Stamos starred in short-lived series such as Dreams and You Again? as well as his first feature film, Never Too Young to Die (1986). His career solidified with Full House, where he played one of the show's lead characters for eight seasons. Following Full House, he starred in shows like Thieves and Jake in Progress, guest-starred on Friends, Two and a Half Men, and Glee, and played paramedic-turned-intern Dr. Tony Gates on ER from 2005 to 2009.
In later television ventures, Stamos starred as the lead in the Fox sitcom Grandfathered, appeared in Scream Queens, and played Dr. Nicky in the thriller series You. His executive producer credits include Fuller House. He has also performed voice acting roles, such as voicing Iron Man in Spidey and His Amazing Friends and Howard Stark in Iron Man and His Awesome Friends, and hosted the podcast series Snatching Sinatra.
A multi-instrumentalist who began learning drums at four, Stamos has performed extensively on stage and in music. On Broadway, he has appeared in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Cabaret, Nine, Bye Bye Birdie, and Gore Vidal's The Best Man. He has independently released and co-written music, directed music videos, and appeared in a Drumeo YouTube video in 2025 performing a drum cover.
Stamos has regularly performed with The Beach Boys since 1985 on drums, percussion, and vocals. He appeared in the music video for their 1988 single "Kokomo", sang lead on a 1992 re-recording of "Forever", and joined them for events including their 50th Reunion Tour and PBS's A Capitol Fourth. His career achievements include a 1983 Daytime Emmy nomination, a 2009–10 Golden Icon Award for Bye Bye Birdie, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame awarded in 2009.
