Allison Janney

Allison Brooks Janney is an American actress born on November 19, 1959. Known for her performances across screen and stage, she has earned widespread recognition, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, and seven Primetime Emmy Awards, along with nominations for two Tony Awards.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, and raised in Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio, Janney is the daughter of Macy Brooks Janney, a former actress, and Jervis Spencer Janney Jr., a real estate developer and jazz musician. She attended the Miami Valley School and the Hotchkiss School. Although she initially aspired to a career in figure skating, her height and a domestic accident during her teenage years altered her path. She attended Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where she majored in theatre and received guidance from Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. She subsequently trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London on a scholarship in 1984.

Janney began her acting career with minor and uncredited roles in television, film, and theater. She made her professional stage debut in the 1989 Off-Broadway production Ladies and her film debut in Who Shot Pat? (1989). During the 1990s, she appeared in numerous films, including Wolf (1994), Big Night (1996), Primary Colors (1998), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), and American Beauty (1999). She made her Broadway debut in the 1996 revival of Present Laughter, winning a Theatre World Award, and earned her first Tony Award nomination for her performance in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge (1998).

Janney achieved her major career breakthrough when she was cast as White House Press Secretary C. J. Cregg in the NBC political drama series The West Wing (1999–2006). For her portrayal of Cregg, she received four Primetime Emmy Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Golden Globe nominations, becoming the most awarded cast member of the series.

Janney continued to establish herself on television with prominent roles in acclaimed series. From 2013 to 2021, she starred as Bonnie Plunkett, a cynical recovering addict, in the CBS sitcom Mom, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards. Between 2014 and 2016, she guest-starred as Margaret Scully, a 1950s housewife, on Showtime's period drama series Masters of Sex, winning an Emmy Award in 2014. Her recent television work includes guest appearances in the Netflix drama series The Diplomat in 2024 and 2025.

In film, Janney played character roles in notable productions such as The Hours (2002), Juno (2007), Hairspray (2007), The Help (2011), Spy (2015), Bad Education (2019), and Bombshell (2019). For her performance as LaVona Golden in the biographical black comedy I, Tonya (2017), she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, as well as a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Critics' Choice Movie Award, and an Independent Spirit Award.

Throughout her career, Janney has also maintained an active stage presence. In 2009, she starred in the original Broadway production of the musical 9 to 5, earning a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical. She returned to Broadway in 2017 to star in a revival of Six Degrees of Separation.
