Spacek attended Quitman High School and initially pursued a singing career, releasing a single titled "John You Went Too Far This Time" in 1968 under the stage name Rainbo. After her record label dropped her due to low sales, she shifted her focus to acting, studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.
Spacek began her career working as a photographic model with Ford Models and as an extra at Andy Warhol's Factory. She made her feature film debut in Michael Ritchie's action crime thriller Prime Cut (1972). Her early career took off with her performance as Holly in Terrence Malick's neo-noir crime drama Badlands (1973), which earned her a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer. In 2001, she delivered a critically acclaimed performance as Ruth Fowler in Todd Field's drama In the Bedroom, winning a Golden Globe Award and receiving her sixth Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Spacek has maintained an extensive presence in television, beginning with an Emmy-nominated role in the Western film The Good Old Boys (1995). Her later television work includes Emmy-nominated performances in the television film Last Call (2002) and the HBO series Big Love (2010–2011). She also starred as Sally Rayburn in Netflix's Bloodline (2015–2017), Ruth Deaver in Hulu's Castle Rock (2018), and Ellen Bergman in Amazon Prime Video's Homecoming (2018). Her subsequent film credits include Tate Taylor's The Help (2011) and David Lowery's The Old Man & the Gun (2018). Spacek remains active in acting, having appeared in the 2022 film Sam & Kate and the series Night Sky.
