Andy Samberg

David Andrew Jerome Samberg, born August 18, 1978, is an American actor, comedian, rapper, writer, and producer. He is a member of the comedy music group the Lonely Island alongside childhood friends Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone. Samberg gained national prominence as a cast member and writer on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 2005 to 2012, where he and his group members popularized the show's SNL Digital Shorts. He is also well known for producing and starring as Detective Jake Peralta in the sitcom series Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013 to 2021.

Samberg was raised in Berkeley, California, by his mother Marjorie, a teacher, and his father Joe Samberg, a photographer. He grew up in a Jewish family with two older sisters, Johanna and Darrow. At age five, he expressed a desire to be called Andy. He attended Chabot Elementary School and Berkeley High School, where he focused his efforts on creative writing before graduating in 1996. After spending two years at the University of California, Santa Cruz, he transferred to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he majored in experimental film and graduated in 2000.

Before joining television, Samberg created comedy videos with Schaffer and Taccone, which gained wider distribution following the establishment of YouTube and their website TheLonelyIsland.com. He officially joined Saturday Night Live in September 2005. During his time on the show, he co-created widely recognized viral prerecorded segments, including "Lazy Sunday," "Dick in a Box," and "I'm on a Boat." He left the show in June 2012, later returning to host the Season 39 finale, contribute to anniversary specials, and portray Doug Emhoff in Season 50.

In 2013, Samberg landed his leading television role as Jake Peralta in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, which aired on Fox and later NBC until 2021. His other television appearances include playing Cuckoo in the BBC Three series Cuckoo in 2012. He has also served as a host for major award shows and special events, including the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, the 67th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2015, and co-hosted the 76th Golden Globe Awards with Sandra Oh in 2019.

Samberg's feature film career includes starring roles in live-action movies such as Hot Rod, That's My Boy, Celeste and Jesse Forever, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and Palm Springs. He has also worked extensively as a voice actor, portraying Jonathan in the Hotel Transylvania film series and lending his voice to animated features including Space Chimps, Storks, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Zootopia 2, and the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs series.

With the Lonely Island, Samberg released the debut musical album Incredibad in 2009 and co-hosts The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. In November 2023, he co-created the comic book series Holy Roller, published by Image Comics. In his personal life, Samberg married musician Joanna Newsom in Big Sur, California, in September 2013. The couple has two children, a daughter born in 2017 and a son born in 2023, and maintains homes in Los Angeles and Manhattan.
