Quinta Brunson

Quinta Brunson is an American comedian, actress, writer, and producer best known for creating, writing, producing, and starring in the network comedy series Abbott Elementary. In the show, she portrays second-grade teacher Janine Teagues. She first attained widespread popularity through her independent online videos before expanding her career into digital production, network television, and feature film development.

Born and raised in West Philadelphia, Brunson is the youngest of five children. Her mother worked as a kindergarten teacher, while her father managed parking facilities. She attended local Philadelphia schools, including Harrity Elementary and the Charter High School for Architecture & Design, where her passion for comedy developed through improv classes. Brunson pursued higher education at Temple University and studied at The Second City in Chicago before relocating to Los Angeles to pursue comedy full time. She later received an honorary Fine Arts degree from Temple University in 2024.

Brunson's professional trajectory gained momentum in 2014 with her self-produced Instagram series, Girl Who Has Never Been on a Nice Date, which quickly went viral. She subsequently joined BuzzFeed Video as a producer and creator, making short-form content focused on young adults. Through BuzzFeed Motion Pictures, she wrote, produced, and starred in the YouTube Red series Broke, earning a Streamy Award nomination, and starred in the go90 platform series Up for Adoption. She also wrote and produced the digital show Quinta vs. Everything.

After departing BuzzFeed in 2018, Brunson contributed to various television projects and network pilots. She appeared on the series iZombie, joined the writing and performing cast for the first season of HBO's A Black Lady Sketch Show, and performed voice roles for animated series including Lazor Wulf and Magical Girl Friendship Squad. Her acting credits also include a recurring role on Miracle Workers and guest voice work on The Simpsons, Big Mouth, and Zootopia 2. In 2021, she published her debut essay collection, She Memes Well.

Brunson achieved widespread critical acclaim after creating Abbott Elementary, which premiered on ABC in December 2021. Named after her former middle school teacher and inspired by her mother's teaching career, the project features Brunson leading an ensemble cast. Beyond her creative responsibilities, Brunson helped direct show marketing resources toward providing essential school supplies to classrooms across the United States. Her work on the show led to major overall studio production deals, including agreements with Warner Bros. Television and 20th Television.

Brunson has earned significant industry accolades for her work, including a Peabody Award and multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for both writing and lead comedy acting, marking historic achievements for Black women in television. She was included on Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in 2022 and hosted Saturday Night Live in 2023. Additionally, she received the Variety Showrunner Award at SCAD TVfest in 2026 and announced plans to develop and star in a Betty Boop film project.

Brunson was previously married to Kevin Jay Anik, an executive in California's legal cannabis industry. The couple lived in the San Fernando Valley before Brunson filed for divorce in March 2025.
