John Mulaney

John Edmund Mulaney is an American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer born on August 26, 1982, in Chicago, Illinois. He first rose to prominence for his work as a writer on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013. During his tenure, he contributed to numerous sketches and co-created the recurring character Stefon with Bill Hader. Mulaney has hosted Saturday Night Live six times and joined its Five Timers Club in 2022.

Mulaney was raised in Chicago as the third of five children born to Ellen Mulaney, a law professor, and Charles Mulaney Jr., a law partner. Both of his parents attended Georgetown University and Yale Law School and are of Irish Catholic heritage. Mulaney attended St. Clement School and later graduated from St. Ignatius College Prep in 2000. He earned a degree in English with a minor in theology from Georgetown University, where he joined an improv group and met fellow comedians Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia.

After graduating from college in 2004, Mulaney moved to New York City and briefly worked as an office assistant at Comedy Central. He began performing stand-up comedy and freelancing before joining the writing staff of Saturday Night Live in 2008. Along with his writing contributions, he made frequent appearances on the show's Weekend Update segment. During this period, he released his debut comedy album The Top Part in 2009 and his first stand-up special New in Town in 2012, both produced with Comedy Central.

Mulaney created, produced, and starred in the semi-autobiographical Fox sitcom Mulaney, which aired from 2014 to 2015. He also began working as a co-executive producer and writer for the IFC mockumentary series Documentary Now!, which premiered in 2015. Beginning in the early 2000s, Mulaney developed the elderly character George St. Geegland, performing alongside Nick Kroll's Gil Faizon. The duo brought their characters to television and eventually to Broadway in Oh, Hello on Broadway, which ran from 2016 to 2017 before being released as a Netflix special.

Mulaney achieved further recognition through his stand-up comedy specials released on Netflix, including The Comeback Kid in 2015, Kid Gorgeous in 2018, and Baby J in 2023. In 2019, he released the children's musical comedy special John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch. Over the course of his career, Mulaney has won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for his work on Kid Gorgeous, Baby J, and SNL 50, alongside an earlier Emmy Award in 2011 for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics on Saturday Night Live.

In addition to stand-up and live-action television, Mulaney has worked as a voice actor. He voiced Andrew Glouberman in the Netflix animated series Big Mouth starting in 2017, Spider-Ham in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in 2018, Chip in Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers in 2022, and Big Jack Horner in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022. He has also taken television acting roles in shows such as Dickinson, The Bear, and Poker Face. He went on to create, host, and executive produce the Netflix talk show Everybody's in LA in 2024 and its spinoff Everybody's Live with John Mulaney in 2025.
