Teller was born in Downingtown, Pennsylvania, to Merry, a real estate agent, and Michael, a nuclear power plant engineer. He spent his early years in Pennsylvania and Delaware before his family moved to Citrus County, Florida, when he was 12. Growing up with two older sisters, Teller participated in high school drama, served as president of the drama club, played baseball, and played the saxophone, drums, piano, and guitar. He graduated from Lecanto High School and earned a BFA in drama from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2009 after studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute and Stonestreet Studios. In 2007, he survived a severe car accident that left scars on his face.
After appearing in short films between 2004 and 2010, Teller made his feature film debut in Rabbit Hole (2010). He subsequently appeared in Footloose (2011), 21 & Over (2013), and The Spectacular Now (2013). His critical breakthrough occurred with his lead role as a jazz drummer in Whiplash (2014), which earned him nominations for the BAFTA Rising Star Award, the Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actor, and the Satellite Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture.
Teller expanded his mainstream profile playing Peter Hayes in the Divergent series (2014–2016), Mister Fantastic in Fantastic Four (2015), arms dealer David Packouz in War Dogs (2016), and boxer Vinny Paz in Bleed for This (2016). In 2017, he starred in the biographical dramas Only the Brave and Thank You for Your Service. He later starred in the Amazon Prime Video series Too Old to Die Young (2019) and portrayed producer Albert S. Ruddy in the Paramount+ miniseries The Offer (2022).
In 2022, Teller starred in the action film Top Gun: Maverick. That same year, he hosted the season opener of Saturday Night Live, and in 2023, he appeared in a Bud Light commercial during Super Bowl LVII. He later co-produced and starred in the Apple TV+ film The Gorge (2025), receiving a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.
Teller married model Keleigh Sperry in 2019 following their 2017 engagement. In 2025, their home was destroyed in the Palisades Fire, and Lecanto High School named its theater the Miles Teller Theatre. Beyond acting, Teller became an early investor in The Finnish Long Drink, which was acquired in April 2026 in a deal valued at over $325 million.
