Bana was born in Melbourne, Victoria, to a Croatian father, Ivan, who worked as a logistics manager for Caterpillar Inc., and a German mother, Eleanor, who was a hairdresser. He was raised Catholic alongside his older brother, Anthony, in the Melbourne suburbs of Broadmeadows and Tullamarine, attending Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School. Showing an early talent for impressions, he was inspired to pursue acting after watching the film Mad Max as a teenager. In 1991, while working as a barman at Melbourne's Castle Hotel, he began performing stand-up comedy.

In 1993, Bana made his television debut on the late-night talk show Tonight Live, which led to a writing and performing role on the sketch-comedy series Full Frontal. His popularity on the show enabled him to release the 1994 comedy album Out of Bounds, host the 1996 special Eric, and launch The Eric Bana Show. Although his self-titled series was cancelled after eight episodes, Bana earned a Logie Award for his comedy work in 1997. Bana achieved a major career breakthrough playing criminal Chopper Read in the biographical film Chopper (2000), a performance that earned him the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor. Following a recurring role in the Australian television series Something in the Air and a part in the comedy The Nugget, he expanded into Hollywood. Director Ridley Scott cast him as Sergeant First Class Norm "Hoot" Hooten in the war film Black Hawk Down (2001). He subsequently starred as Bruce Banner in Ang Lee's superhero film Hulk (2003), voiced Anchor in Finding Nemo (2003), and portrayed Prince Hector in the historical war epic Troy (2004).

In 2005, Bana played Mossad agent Avner in Steven Spielberg's historical thriller Munich. He followed this with roles in Lucky You (2007) and the drama Romulus, My Father (2007), which won him a second Australian Film Institute Award for Best Actor. He went on to portray Henry VIII in The Other Boleyn Girl (2008), the villainous Romulan captain Nero in the science-fiction film Star Trek (2009), and Henry DeTamble in The Time Traveller's Wife (2009). Kristensen in Lone Survivor (2013) and police Sergeant Ralph Sarchie in the horror film Deliver Us from Evil (2014).
