Michael Smiley

Michael Smiley is a Northern Irish comedian and actor who was born on 29 January 1963. He is widely recognized for his roles in feature films such as Kill List and The Lobster. Beyond his cinematic work, he has appeared in numerous well-known British television productions, including Spaced, Luther, Utopia, Black Mirror, and Doctor Who.

Smiley was born in Belfast and grew up in a Catholic household in Holywood alongside his older brother and sister. In 1983, he relocated to London with his first wife. Prior to his career in entertainment, he worked as a cycle courier and an acid house DJ. He entered stand-up comedy in 1993 after accepting a bet at an open-mic night.

Smiley established his comedy career with performances at major events including the Edinburgh Fringe and the Melbourne Comedy Festival. He earned widespread television recognition playing the rave-obsessed bicycle courier Tyres O'Flaherty across two episodes of the sitcom Spaced. During the 2000s, he took on screen roles such as a former soldier named Mac in the 2008 film Outpost, a zombie in Shaun of the Dead, and guest characters in 15 Storeys High, Hustle, and the Doctor Who audio project Creatures of Beauty.

His career expanded with regular radio and television work, including portraying security guard Des Wainwright across three series of Radio 4's The Maltby Collection and playing Benny "Deadhead" Silver in the BBC series Luther. In 2010, he featured in the film Burke & Hare alongside Simon Pegg and Jessica Hynes. Smiley achieved significant critical acclaim for his performance in the 2011 British horror film Kill List, winning the Best Supporting Actor award at the 2011 British Independent Film Awards.

In 2013, Smiley appeared in television series such as Ripper Street as George Lusk, Utopia as Detective Reynolds, Black Mirror as Baxter in the episode "White Bear", Father Figure as Roddy, and Ambassadors as Mr Jackson, while also portraying the primary antagonist O'Neill in the film A Field in England. In 2014, he played Micky Murray in The Life of Rock with Brian Pern and Colonel Morgan Blue in Doctor Who. He also hosted the cycling travelog series Michael Smiley: Something to Ride Home About on BBC Northern Ireland, which ran for two series.

Smiley remained active in film and television in subsequent years. He co-starred in the 2019 feature Come to Daddy, headlined the six-part 2020 Irish-Canadian drama Dead Still, starred in the 2021 Welsh film The Toll, and featured as Shmuel in Alien: Earth in 2025. In his personal life, Smiley shared a flat with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost during the 1990s, is an avid cyclist, and has four children from two marriages.
