Juliette Binoche

Juliette Binoche is a French actress who has performed in more than 60 feature films, working extensively in both French and English. She is widely recognized for her dramatic performances and has earned major international honors, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a César Award. Alongside Julianne Moore, she is one of only two actresses to have won acting prizes across all three major world film festivals, having secured a Volpi Cup, a Silver Bear, and a Cannes Film Festival Award.

Born in Paris, Binoche was raised in a family connected to the arts. Her father worked as a director, actor, and sculptor, while her mother was an actress, director, and teacher. Her background includes French, Walloon, and Polish ancestry, as well as Portuguese-Brazilian heritage through her father. After her parents divorced when she was four, she and her sister were sent to a provincial boarding school and later spent holidays with their maternal grandmother. She pursued school theater as a teenager, eventually attending the Conservatoire National Supérieur d'Art Dramatique before leaving to join a touring theater group and take private acting lessons.

Binoche made her early screen appearances in television and small film roles in the early 1980s. She gained wider exposure through supporting performances in Jean-Luc Godard's Hail Mary and Jacques Doillon's Family Life. Her breakthrough came in 1985 with André Téchiné's Rendez-vous, which brought her widespread recognition at the Cannes Film Festival and her first César Award nomination. She further solidified her reputation in France with notable roles in films such as Mauvais Sang, directed by Leos Carax.

Her international profile expanded with her first English-language role in the 1988 film adaptation of The Unbearable Lightness of Being, directed by Philip Kaufman. Returning to French cinema, she spent three years working on Carax's Les Amants du Pont-Neuf, for which she created the artwork featured in the film and won a European Film Award. In the early 1990s, Binoche relocated to London to star in adaptations of Wuthering Heights and Louis Malle's drama Damage, both of which elevated her global presence.

Critical acclaim reached new heights with her starring role in Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colours: Blue (1993), which earned her the Volpi Cup at the Venice Film Festival and a César Award. She went on to achieve major international success by winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing a nurse in The English Patient (1996). Her lead performance in the romantic film Chocolat (2000) earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 2010 she won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for Abbas Kiarostami's Certified Copy.

In addition to her film career, Binoche has periodically performed on stage. Notable theatrical projects include a 1998 West End production of Luigi Pirandello's Naked and a 2000 Broadway production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal, which earned her a Tony Award nomination. In 2008, she expanded into modern dance, embarking on an international tour for the stage production in-i, created in collaboration with choreographer Akram Khan.

Binoche has maintained an active film career in subsequent years, taking leading roles in a diverse range of productions. Her later screen credits include Clouds of Sils Maria (2014), Happy End (2017), High Life (2018), The Taste of Things (2023), and The Return (2024).
