Catalina Sandino Moreno

Catalina Sandino Moreno is a Colombian actress who gained international recognition for her breakout performance in the 2004 drama Maria Full of Grace. Her portrayal of the titular character earned her critical acclaim, including a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Born on April 19, 1981, in Bogotá, Colombia, Sandino Moreno grew up in a middle-class family. Her father worked as a veterinarian and her mother as a pathologist. She received her education at Saint George's School, an English-taught institution located in Bogotá. Prior to starting her professional acting career, she pursued studies in advertising.

Sandino Moreno achieved her breakthrough when she was chosen over approximately 800 candidates for the lead role of María Alvarez in Maria Full of Grace. In the film, she portrayed a pregnant Colombian flower plantation worker who becomes involved in drug trafficking. Her work led to a Best Actress nomination at the 77th Academy Awards and the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival, an honor she shared with Charlize Theron. Following this early success, she relocated to New York City in 2005 to study dramatic arts and became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Following her debut, Sandino Moreno sought roles that aligned with her interest in depicting real-world experiences. In 2006, she appeared in the independent feature Fast Food Nation and portrayed a young immigrant mother named Ana in the "Loin du 16e" segment of Paris, je t'aime. She followed these projects with the 2007 film adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez's novel Love in the Time of Cholera, playing Hildebranda Sánchez. In 2008, she portrayed Aleida March de Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's biographical film Che, attending the premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. She later played the vampire Maria in the 2010 film The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

Throughout the 2010s, Sandino Moreno took on roles across film and television. Her motion picture credits included Roa in 2013, A Most Violent Year in 2014, and the legal drama Custody in 2016, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. On television, she played recurring characters such as Isabella in the fifth season of Falling Skies and Christina Morales in American Gothic in 2016, alongside her role in the drama series The Affair from 2015 to 2019.

In subsequent years, Sandino Moreno featured in productions such as The Quarry in 2020, Barbarians in 2021, and the television series From starting in 2022. She portrayed Saya Godluck in the 2023 John Woo action feature Silent Night and was cast as Lena Macarro in the John Wick spin-off movie Ballerina. On a personal level, she married motion picture electrician David Elwell on April 15, 2006, in Cartagena de Indias after meeting him during the production of Maria Full of Grace. She was also featured in People magazine's list of the 50 Most Beautiful Women in 2005.
