Born on April 15, 1983, in São Paulo, Braga was raised in a Catholic family. Her introduction to acting occurred early in life through her mother, Ana Braga, and her aunt, Sônia Braga, who are both actresses. She frequently visited film sets with them during her childhood and started acting in school plays and advertisements. Her first commercial appearance was for a yogurt brand at eight years old, and she began seeking television and film roles during her teenage years. She is trilingual, speaking Portuguese, English, and Spanish fluently.

Braga made her screen debut in the 1998 Portuguese-language short film Trampolim before taking a brief hiatus to complete her schooling. Her English-language debut occurred in 2006 with a lead role in the crime thriller Journey to the End of Night, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Following her performance in I Am Legend, Braga took on a variety of roles in international feature films. She appeared in David Mamet's martial arts drama Redbelt in 2008, the apocalyptic thriller Blindness in 2008, and the ensemble crime drama Crossing Over in 2009.

Throughout the 2010s, Braga worked extensively across science fiction, action, and drama genres. She played Beth in Repo Men in 2010 and portrayed Isabelle in the science fiction action feature Predators that same year. She later starred as Frey Santiago in Neill Blomkamp's 2013 film Elysium. Her screen work in 2014 included the Brazilian jungle feature The Ardor, the Argentine romantic drama Latitudes, and the thriller Kill Me Three Times. She subsequently appeared in the western film The Duel in 2016 and the Christian drama The Shack in 2017.

From 2016 to 2021, Braga starred as Teresa Mendoza in the television series Queen of the South on USA Network, adapted from Arturo Pérez-Reverte's novel La Reina del Sur. The project represented her first lead role in an American television series. Her subsequent screen credits include playing Cecilia Reyes in the 2020 superhero horror film The New Mutants and Maggie Teixeira in the Luca Guadagnino drama miniseries We Are Who We Are. She also featured in the 2021 superhero movie The Suicide Squad.

In her ongoing career, Braga maintains homes in both Los Angeles and São Paulo. Beginning in 2024, she joined the cast of the Apple TV science fiction series Dark Matter, and she stars in the 2026 Netflix series Man on Fire.
