About Josh Lucas
Joshua Lucas Easy Dent Maurer, born June 20, 1971, is an American actor. He is widely recognized for his feature film roles in productions such as American Psycho, A Beautiful Mind, Sweet Home Alabama, Hulk, Wonderland, Stealth, Glory Road, Poseidon, Red Dog, The Lincoln Lawyer, Ford v Ferrari, and The Black Demon. On television, he is known for starring and recurring roles in series including The Firm, The Mysteries of Laura, and Yellowstone.
Lucas was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Michele LeFevre, a nurse midwife, and Don Maurer, an emergency room doctor. Raised by parents who worked as anti-nuclear activists, he moved frequently during his childhood, living in 30 different locations by age 13, including Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island in South Carolina. His family eventually settled in Gig Harbor, Washington, where he attended Kopachuck Middle School and acted in plays at Gig Harbor High School before graduating in 1989. He has three younger siblings.
After moving to Hollywood at age 19, Lucas began his screen career guest-starring on television programs such as True Colors, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Life Goes On, and Jake and the Fatman. He appeared in the television movie Class of '61 as George Armstrong Custer and made his feature film debut in Alive (1993). After starring as Luke McGregor in the Australian television series The Man from Snowy River, he sought more mature roles and relocated to New York City to study privately with acting coaches on the advice of actor George C. Scott.
Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, Lucas built his portfolio with appearances in films like True Blue, Restless, You Can Count on Me, and Session 9, alongside stage work in the off-Broadway production Corpus Christi. He achieved major mainstream recognition through high-profile roles in A Beautiful Mind (2001), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), and Hulk (2003). He subsequently took on leading film roles, including portraying basketball coach Don Haskins in Glory Road (2006)—a role for which he gained 40 pounds—as well as starring in Stealth (2005) and Poseidon (2006).
Lucas continued to work across studio and independent films, including Death in Love, Stolen, Red Dog—for which he won an Inside Film Award—and The Mend. His television work expanded to main roles in NBC's adaptation of The Firm and the crime drama The Mysteries of Laura, as well as playing a younger version of John Dutton in Yellowstone. He has also provided commercial voice-over work for The Home Depot and participated in documentary projects, including collaborations with filmmaker Ken Burns.
In addition to acting, Lucas is a co-owner of the company Filthy Food and served as a YouthAIDS Ambassador. He was politically active during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign supporting Barack Obama. Lucas married Jessica Ciencin Henriquez in 2012, with whom he shares a son, prior to their 2014 divorce. He later married Brianna Ruffalo in July 2025. In 2026, he was cast in the western thriller film The Rescue.
