Sam Elliott

Samuel Pack Elliott, born August 9, 1944, is an American actor known for his distinct deep voice and long career across film and television. Over nearly six decades, he established himself as a prominent character actor, frequently appearing in Westerns and dramatic projects. His achievements include a Screen Actors Guild Award and a National Board of Review Award, alongside nominations for an Academy Award, Primetime Emmy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards.

Elliott was born in Sacramento, California, to Glynn Mamie, a teacher and former diving champion, and Henry Nelson Elliott, a predator-control specialist. At age 13, he moved with his family to Portland, Oregon, where he attended David Douglas High School. He later studied at the University of Oregon and Clark College. Following his father's death, Elliott moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting while working in construction and serving in the California Air National Guard.

His screen career began with minor television roles in shows like Judd for the Defense, Lancer, and Mission: Impossible, as well as a small appearance in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969). After starring in the horror film Frogs (1972), Elliott achieved a major breakthrough with his lead role in the 1976 drama Lifeguard. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, he starred in prominent television miniseries, including Once an Eagle, Aspen, and adaptations of Louis L'Amour novels such as The Sacketts.

In 1985, Elliott gained commercial success in the biopic Mask. He subsequently co-starred in Road House (1989) and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Conagher (1991). During the 1990s, he portrayed historical figures in Gettysburg (1993), Tombstone (1993), and Buffalo Girls (1995), earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for the latter. He also narrated and appeared as The Stranger in the comedy film The Big Lebowski (1998).

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Elliott appeared in films such as We Were Soldiers (2002), Hulk (2003), Ghost Rider (2007), and The Golden Compass (2007). On television, he made guest appearances on Justified, Parks and Recreation, and Grace and Frankie, and starred in the sitcom The Ranch from 2016 to 2020. He also provided voice work for animated films such as Barnyard and The Good Dinosaur.

Elliott earned widespread critical acclaim for his supporting role in Bradley Cooper's 2018 film A Star Is Born, receiving a National Board of Review Award and an Academy Award nomination. He later starred in the 2021 western miniseries 1883, winning a Screen Actors Guild Award. His recent projects include voicing the character Wild West in Family Guy and joining the cast of the series Landman.

Beyond acting, Elliott has worked extensively in voice-over narration for commercial campaigns, political ads, and public mascots such as Smokey Bear. He married actress Katharine Ross in 1984, with whom he has a daughter, maintaining residences in California and Oregon.
