Farrah Fawcett

Mary Farrah Leni Fawcett was an American actress and model who rose to international fame in the 1970s. She is best known for her starring role as private investigator Jill Munroe in the first season of the television series Charlie's Angels, as well as her iconic 1976 red swimsuit poster. Over the course of her career, she became a four-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee and six-time Golden Globe Award nominee for her work across television, film, and theater.

Fawcett was born on February 2, 1947, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Pauline Alice Evans, a homemaker, and James William Fawcett, an oil field contractor. Raised Roman Catholic, she attended St. Patrick's parish school and W. B. Ray High School, where classmates voted her most beautiful in each of her four years. She enrolled at the University of Texas in 1965, initially studying microbiology before switching her major to art under Charles Umlauf. After being named one of the campus's most beautiful coeds as a freshman, her photographs attracted Hollywood agent David Mirisch, leading her to move to Los Angeles in the summer of 1968 to pursue an entertainment career.

Upon arriving in Hollywood, Fawcett signed a contract with Screen Gems and began appearing in television commercials for products such as Ultra Brite toothpaste and Noxzema skin cream. She secured early television guest roles on shows including The Flying Nun, I Dream of Jeannie, Harry O, and The Six Million Dollar Man alongside her then-husband, Lee Majors. In 1976, she posed for a photo shoot in a one-piece red bathing suit taken by Bruce McBroom. The resulting poster sold six million copies in its first year, becoming the best-selling poster in history.

Later in 1976, Fawcett gained widespread stardom starring alongside Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith in the ABC television series Charlie's Angels. Her performance earned her a People's Choice Award and her first Golden Globe nomination, while her signature hairstyle became a worldwide trend. Despite the show's massive success, Fawcett departed after the first season in 1977 to pursue film roles, though she later made six guest appearances between 1978 and 1980. Her early post-series feature films included Somebody Killed Her Husband, Sunburn, Saturn 3, and The Cannonball Run.

Fawcett transitioned to dramatic acting in 1983, earning praise for her performance in the Off-Broadway play Extremities. She starred in its 1986 film adaptation, receiving a Golden Globe nomination. She earned her first Primetime Emmy Award nomination for playing a battered wife in the 1984 television movie The Burning Bed. Her performances in TV projects such as Poor Little Rich Girl: The Barbara Hutton Story, Double Exposure: The Story of Margaret Bourke-White, and Small Sacrifices brought additional Golden Globe and Emmy nominations, as well as a CableACE Award.

In the late 1990s and 2000s, Fawcett continued working across film and television. She earned strong reviews for her role in the 1997 film The Apostle with Robert Duvall and held recurring roles on series such as Spin City and The Guardian, the latter earning her a third Emmy nomination. In 2006, Fawcett was diagnosed with anal cancer. Her battle with the illness was documented in the 2009 NBC broadcast Farrah's Story, which she produced. Fawcett died on June 25, 2009, at age 62, and posthumously received her fourth Emmy Award nomination for her work on the documentary.
