Ryan O’Neal

Charles Patrick Ryan O'Neal (April 20, 1941 – December 8, 2023) was an American actor born in Los Angeles. Before launching his acting career in 1960, he trained as an amateur boxer. He initially achieved prominence on television before transitioning to major feature films in the 1970s. Over his career, O'Neal worked with notable directors across various genres, ranging from romantic dramas and screwball comedies to period pieces and war films.

O'Neal was the elder son of actress Patricia O'Callaghan and novelist and screenwriter Charles O'Neal. His father was of Irish and English descent, while his mother was of Irish and Jewish ancestry. His younger brother, Kevin O'Neal, was also an actor and screenwriter. O'Neal attended University High School in Los Angeles, where he trained as a Golden Gloves boxer. In the late 1950s, his family moved to Munich, Germany, where his father wrote for the television show Citizen Soldier, and O'Neal attended Munich American High School.

While in Germany, O'Neal worked as an extra and stuntman on Tales of the Vikings, which sparked his interest in acting. After returning to the United States, he made his television debut on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis in 1960. He followed this with guest appearances on shows such as Leave It to Beaver, Perry Mason, and The Virginian. Between 1962 and 1963, he was a regular on the western series Empire. In 1964, O'Neal landed the role of Rodney Harrington on the prime-time serial drama Peyton Place, which boosted his career. His first lead feature film role came in The Big Bounce in 1969.

O'Neal achieved movie stardom with his lead performance in the romantic drama Love Story (1970), earning nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama. He followed this success with the screwball comedy What's Up, Doc? (1972) opposite Barbra Streisand, and Paper Moon (1973), in which he starred alongside his daughter Tatum O'Neal. His performance in Paper Moon brought him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

O'Neal's film career continued through the 1970s with roles such as the title character in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975), General James Gavin in A Bridge Too Far (1977), and the lead in The Driver (1978). He returned to romance and comedy in Oliver's Story (1978) and reunited with Streisand in The Main Event (1979). In the 1980s, his film credits included So Fine (1981), Partners (1982), Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Fever Pitch (1985), and Tough Guys Don't Dance (1987).

In his later career, O'Neal returned to television work, including the series Good Sports (1991) alongside Farrah Fawcett and television films like Small Sacrifices (1989) and The Man Upstairs (1992). He also appeared in films such as Faithful (1996), Hacks (1997), and An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn (1998). From 2006 to 2017, O'Neal played the recurring role of Max, the protagonist's father, on the Fox series Bones. He died on December 8, 2023.
