Marcia Cross

Marcia Cross is an American actress born on March 25, 1962. She grew up in Marlborough, Massachusetts, as the youngest of three daughters born to Janet, a teacher, and Mark J. Cross, a personnel manager. She is of English and Irish descent and was raised Catholic. Showing an early interest in performing, Cross took piano and dance lessons, served as her high school's mascot, and performed her first acting role in a grade school adaptation of The Witch of Blackbird Pond. She graduated from Marlborough High School in 1980, attended Juilliard on a half-scholarship, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting in 1984. She later earned a master's degree in psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles in 2003.

Cross began her acting career on daytime television in 1984 with a recurring role on the soap opera The Edge of Night. After relocating from New York to Los Angeles, she starred in television movies such as The Last Days of Frank and Jesse James alongside Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson. She held roles on daytime soap operas including Another World in 1986 and One Life to Live from 1986 to 1987. During this period, she also made guest appearances on primetime series such as Who's the Boss?, Quantum Leap, Knots Landing, and Cheers.

In 1992, Cross gained wider prominent visibility when she was cast as Dr. Kimberly Shaw in the primetime soap opera Melrose Place, a role she played until leaving during its fifth season. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, she appeared in comedy and dramatic television series including Seinfeld, Boy Meets World, Ally McBeal, Spin City, The King of Queens, CSI, Strong Medicine, Profiler, and Touched by an Angel. Her film credits during this time include Bad Influence in 1990 and Always Say Goodbye in 1996. In 2003, she spent a season playing Linda Abbott on the drama series Everwood.

Cross achieved major recognition beginning in 2004 when she starred as Bree Van de Kamp on the ABC series Desperate Housewives. The show became a breakout hit, and Cross remained with the series across its eight-season run through 2012. For her performance, she earned a Satellite Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards with her cast, and nominations for three Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

Following the conclusion of Desperate Housewives, Cross co-starred in the comedy pilot Fatrick in 2014 and guest-starred on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2015. From 2015 to 2017, she played the recurring role of President Claire Haas on the thriller series Quantico. Her additional feature film credits include Just Peck in 2009 and Bringing Up Bobby in 2011.

In her personal life, Cross was the long-time partner of actor Richard Jordan until his death in 1993. She married stockbroker Tom Mahoney in 2006, and gave birth to fraternal twin daughters in February 2007. In September 2018, Cross announced she was in remission following treatment for anal cancer, subsequently becoming an advocate for public awareness regarding HPV infections. Cross has also publicly voiced support for a ceasefire in the Gaza war and signed an open pledge with Film Workers for Palestine in September 2025.
