Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone, born July 6, 1946, in New York City, is an American actor and filmmaker whose career spans more than five decades. Recognized as a defining figure in action cinema who helped reshape the modern film hero, his movies have grossed more than $7.5 billion globally. He holds the distinction of being one of only two actors to star in a box-office number-one feature across six consecutive decades. Over his career, he has earned a Golden Globe Award, a Critics' Choice Award, and multiple Academy Award nominations.

Stallone was born in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan to a mother who worked as an astrologer and wrestling promoter and a father who was a hairdresser. Complications during his delivery involving forceps damaged a facial nerve, causing lifelong partial paralysis on the lower left side of his face that influenced his speech and expression. During his childhood and adolescence, he lived in various locations including Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia. He attended several educational institutions and studied drama at the University of Miami before later receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the school in 1998.

After relocating to New York City in 1969, Stallone struggled financially and worked various odd jobs while seeking acting opportunities. He appeared in minor stage and screen roles, low-budget features, and the ensemble drama The Lords of Flatbush (1974). His major breakthrough came when he authored the screenplay for Rocky (1976) and insisted on playing the lead role of boxer Rocky Balboa. The film became a massive commercial and critical success, winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards and earning Stallone Oscar nominations for both Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Building on this accomplishment, Stallone expanded the Rocky franchise through writing and directing several sequels. He launched a second major action series by co-writing and starring as John Rambo in First Blood (1982). Throughout the mid-1980s and 1990s, Stallone ranked among Hollywood's highest-earning performers, starring in action features such as Cobra (1986), Tango and Cash (1989), Cliffhanger (1993), Demolition Man (1993), and The Specialist (1994). He also directed the dance sequel Staying Alive (1983) and stepped outside the action genre for projects like the comedies Oscar (1991) and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992), as well as the drama Cop Land (1997).

In later years, Stallone revived his primary franchises with Rocky Balboa (2006) and Rambo (2008), and subsequently created The Expendables series starting in 2010. He achieved renewed critical acclaim by reprising his signature boxing role in Creed (2015), winning a Golden Globe and securing his third Academy Award nomination four decades after his first. His later work includes appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Escape Plan series, and the television crime drama Tulsa King (2022–present). Outside of acting and filmmaking, he is an art collector, painter, and author of fitness books.
