Dolph Lundgren

Hans "Dolph" Lundgren, born November 3, 1957, is a Swedish and American actor, filmmaker, and martial artist. He gained widespread recognition for portraying Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in his breakthrough role in Rocky IV (1985), a character he later reprised in Creed II (2018). Following his breakout performance, Lundgren established himself as an action film star, going on to play lead roles in over 80 action-oriented motion pictures.

Born in Spånga, Stockholm County, Sweden, to a language teacher mother and an engineer and economist father, Lundgren lived in Spånga and later with his grandparents in Nyland. He began practicing martial arts in his youth, eventually earning a 4th dan black belt in Kyokushin karate and becoming the European champion in 1980 and 1981. Academically, he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and earned a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney in 1982. Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to MIT in 1983, he relocated to New York City, working as a bouncer and brief model before deciding to leave his engineering studies to pursue an acting career.

Lundgren made his feature film debut in the 1985 James Bond production A View to a Kill, appearing in a minor role as a KGB assassin. Later that year, he landed his breakthrough role in Rocky IV opposite Sylvester Stallone after an intensive training regimen in bodybuilding and boxing. His performance catapulted him to international prominence. In 1987, he released the home workout video Maximum Potential and starred as He-Man in Masters of the Universe. He continued to lead action productions throughout the late 1980s, including Red Scorpion (1988), the comic book adaptation The Punisher (1989), and the sci-fi action film I Come in Peace (1990).

During the 1990s, Lundgren maintained a steady presence in action cinema, appearing in Cover Up (1991), Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991), and Joshua Tree (1993). In 1992, he co-starred opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in the sci-fi action hit Universal Soldier, playing the villainous Sergeant Andrew Scott, a role he would reprise in subsequent franchise entries. His other projects during this decade included Pentathlon (1994), Men of War (1994), Silent Trigger (1996), and Blackjack (1998).

In the 2000s, Lundgren primarily appeared in direct-to-video films and began directing his own projects, including The Defender (2004), The Mechanik (2005), Missionary Man (2007), and Command Performance (2009). He returned to mainstream prominence in 2010 as Gunner Jensen in Sylvester Stallone's ensemble action film The Expendables, returning for its sequels. His subsequent work includes roles in Don't Kill It (2017), Aquaman (2018), Castle Falls (2021)—which he also directed—and Showdown at the Grand (2023). He has also appeared on television series such as SAF3 and Arrow, and contributed voice acting to animated projects including Seal Team (2021) and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022).
