Born on 13 January 1990 in Melbourne, Australia, Hemsworth is the son of author Leonie and social-services counsellor Craig Hemsworth. He grew up alongside his two older brothers, Chris and Luke Hemsworth, who are also actors. During his eighth year of high school, his family relocated to Phillip Island, where he spent significant time surfing. Before embarking on an acting career, he worked laying floors for six months and participated in high school plays.

Hemsworth began his professional acting career in 2007 with guest appearances on the Australian television series Home and Away and McLeod's Daughters. Later that year, he landed a recurring role as Josh Taylor on Neighbours. In 2008, he played Marcus on the children's show The Elephant Princess and made early film appearances in Triangle and Knowing. In March 2009, he moved to the United States to pursue larger acting opportunities.

Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, Hemsworth secured his American feature breakout playing Will Blakelee opposite Miley Cyrus in the 2010 film adaptation of The Last Song. That same year, he hosted the Nickelodeon Australian Kids' Choice Awards and appeared in music videos for Cyrus and the Zac Brown Band. In 2011, he was cast as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games, ultimately reprising the character across three sequels released through 2015.

Throughout the 2010s, Hemsworth expanded his film credits with roles in the war drama Love and Honor, the thrillers Empire State and Paranoia, and the Australian adaptation The Dressmaker. He also starred in the sci-fi feature Independence Day: Resurgence in 2016. After a short hiatus, he returned to the screen in 2019 with roles in the romantic comedy Isn't It Romantic and the crime film Killerman.

Hemsworth later starred as the lead in the short-form horror series Most Dangerous Game for the streaming platform Quibi. His subsequent projects included being cast in the Netflix feature film Lonely Planet alongside Laura Dern and being selected to replace Henry Cavill in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia beginning in the fourth season of Netflix's series The Witcher.

Outside of his acting career, Hemsworth served as an ambassador for the Australian Childhood Foundation beginning in 2012. He was in a long-term relationship with singer and actress Miley Cyrus, whom he married in December 2018 before their divorce was finalized in January 2020. During their relationship, the couple donated $500,000 to The Malibu Foundation following the destruction of their home in the Woolsey Fire. Hemsworth later became engaged to Australian model Gabriella Brooks in September 2025.
