About Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger is an Austrian-American actor, film producer, businessman, politician, and former professional bodybuilder. Born on July 30, 1947, he achieved international prominence as a multi-time champion bodybuilder before becoming a major Hollywood action star. He later entered public service, serving as the 38th governor of California from 2003 to 2011.
Raised in Thal, Styria, Schwarzenegger was the second son of Gustav, a local police chief who had served in the German military during World War II, and Aurelia Schwarzenegger. Growing up in a strict Catholic household, he faced a challenging relationship with his father and struggled with dyslexia at school. Although his father encouraged him to play sports like Bavarian curling, Schwarzenegger chose to pursue bodybuilding around the age of fourteen after being introduced to weight training through soccer. He developed his early passion while training in Graz and drew inspiration from screen icons of the era.
In 1965, Schwarzenegger fulfilled mandatory Austrian military service, during which he went absent without leave to compete in and win the Junior Mr. Europe title. He subsequently moved to London to train under coach Charles Bennett, refining his physique and learning English. In 1967, at age twenty, he became the youngest person to capture the Mr. Universe title, an honor he ultimately won four times. Relocating to the United States in 1968 to train in California, he secured seven Mr. Olympia titles. During this era, he pursued higher education, eventually receiving a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing from the University of Wisconsin–Superior in 1980, and gained American citizenship in 1983.
Schwarzenegger's appearance in the 1977 documentary Pumping Iron, alongside the release of his successful autobiographical training book, launched his film career. His cinematic breakthrough came with the title role in Conan the Barbarian in 1982, followed by a 1984 sequel. He attained global stardom playing the lead character in The Terminator (1984), a role he repeated across four sequels. His filmography expanded to include hit action features such as Commando, Predator, Total Recall, and True Lies, as well as comedies like Twins, Kindergarten Cop, and Jingle All the Way. His movies have grossed more than $5.4 billion worldwide, and he established his own production company, Oak Productions. Additionally, the Arnold Sports Festival was named in his honor.
A registered Republican, Schwarzenegger chaired the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports during the George H. W. Bush administration. He entered California politics in 2003, winning a special recall election to replace Governor Gray Davis with nearly forty-nine percent of the vote. Sworn into office in November 2003, he won reelection in 2006 with nearly fifty-six percent of the vote. After finishing his second term in 2011 due to term limits, he resumed his acting career.
