After earning his Abitur at a vocational grammar school in Oldenburg-Haarentor, Bohlen moved to Göttingen to study business administration at the Georg-August-Universität, completing his degree in 1978.
Bohlen began composing music during his school years and worked as a songwriter for the Hamburg-based label Intersong in the late 1970s. In 1978, he co-founded the short-lived duo Monza with Holger Garbode. He joined the Berlin-based Hansa label in 1980 and released three English solo singles under the pseudonym Steve Benson. Shortly after ending the project, Bohlen joined the band Sunday, appearing on the ZDF-Hitparade in early 1982, and co-wrote songs for other German recording artists, including Bernd Clüver's Eurovision pre-selection entry "Mit 17".
Between 1982 and 1984, Bohlen produced several German singles for Schlager singer Thomas Anders before the pair formed the pop duo Modern Talking. The group achieved major international success, reaching number one on the German singles chart five consecutive times with tracks such as "You're My Heart, You're My Soul" and "Cheri, Cheri Lady". Following Modern Talking's initial breakup in 1987, Bohlen established his solo project Blue System, which ran for a decade. Modern Talking later reunited in 1998, releasing further successful singles before disbanding again in 2003.

He composed soundtrack music for television, notably writing Chris Norman's Central European hit "Midnight Lady" for a 1986 Tatort episode and the platinum-certified soundtrack for the series Rivalen der Rennbahn in 1989. His compositions represented Germany and Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest on multiple occasions. Between 2010 and 2018, he collaborated with Schlager singer Andrea Berg on a series of chart-topping albums.
In 2002, Bohlen became a core judge on Deutschland sucht den Superstar, the German adaptation of Pop Idol, appearing on every season and producing tracks for the show's winners, including the ECHO-winning single "We Have a Dream". He also gained a permanent judging seat on Das Supertalent upon its launch in 2007. Bohlen published five books between 2002 and 2008, including his debut autobiography Nichts als die Wahrheit, which sold over one million copies in Germany and served as the basis for the 2006 animated feature Dieter: Der Film.
Outside of television and music production, Bohlen has undertaken numerous advertising endorsements and launched commercial products, including a perfume, a clothing line, and wallpaper collections.
