Paul McCartney

Sir James Paul McCartney is an English musician and songwriter who gained global fame as the bassist, keyboardist, co-primary songwriter, and lead vocalist for the Beatles alongside John Lennon. Recognized for his melodic bass-playing, versatile tenor vocal range, and broad musical eclecticism spanning pop, classical, ballads, and electronica, McCartney formed what remains the most successful songwriting partnership in music history with Lennon.

Born on 18 June 1942 at Walton Hospital in Liverpool, McCartney was raised by his parents, Mary Patricia and James "Jim" McCartney. His father, a former trumpet player and pianist who led a 1920s jazz band, encouraged musical talent at home. Following his mother's death in 1956, McCartney engaged deeply with music as a teenager. Influenced by rhythm and blues and early rock and roll acts like Little Richard, he taught himself piano, guitar, and songwriting, exchanging a birthday trumpet for an acoustic guitar and adapting his technique to play left-handed.

In July 1957, McCartney met John Lennon and joined his skiffle group, the Quarrymen, which officially adopted the name the Beatles in August 1960. After bassist Stuart Sutcliffe departed in 1961, McCartney became the band's primary bass player. The group quickly rose to international prominence, triggering widespread fan hysteria known as Beatlemania. During this early period, McCartney co-wrote several of the band's major hits, including "I Saw Her Standing There", "She Loves You", and "I Want to Hold Your Hand".

As the Beatles' career progressed, McCartney played a key role in incorporating experimental aesthetics and classical elements into their studio recordings, beginning with his 1965 string arrangement composition "Yesterday" and continuing through albums like Revolver. Following the death of manager Brian Epstein in August 1967, McCartney assumed a leading role in guiding the group's business and artistic directions, spearheading concept projects such as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Magical Mystery Tour. Many of his Beatles compositions, including "Eleanor Rigby" and "Blackbird", became among the most covered songs in history.

After the Beatles disbanded, McCartney launched his solo career with the 1970 album McCartney before forming the group Wings with his first wife, Linda, and Denny Laine. Led by McCartney, Wings achieved major commercial success throughout the 1970s with hits such as "My Love", "Band on the Run", and "Mull of Kintyre". He resumed touring as a solo artist in 1989 and earned additional number-one singles, including collaborations with artists such as Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.

McCartney is one of the best-selling music artists in history, with estimated sales of 100 million records and 32 Billboard Hot 100 number-one songwriting credits. His career honours include 19 Grammy Awards, two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, a 1965 appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire, and a 1997 knighthood. Beyond music, he has supported international charitable initiatives focused on animal rights, land mines, vegetarianism, poverty alleviation, and music education.
